Another active weather week in Maine
We've been locked in an extremely cold pattern for several weeks now, but there are finally signs that it will ease with a thaw on the way later this week. Before we get there, we'll need to get through a couple of wintry systems that could impact travel and commuting. The first has departed after dropping an inch or two of snow across the area. It's a very weak clipper system.
Nor’easter bringing heavy snow, strong winds to arrive Wednesday night Original
Crocuses are blooming, tulips are poking up and the birds are back from their winter vacation. Spring is here. But it wouldn’t be complete without a snow threat, and this one is real and big. Low pressure is developing over the Mid-Atlantic and will blow up into a legit, slow-moving nor’easter that will impact Maine for a few days. TIMING Precipitation will move in from southwest to northeast starting sometime between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
Midweek storm has potential for heavy snow, rain, power outages Original
This is not an April Fool’s joke. It’s real. I wouldn’t joke around about a threat of power outages, especially after the winter we’ve endured. An area of low pressure will move into Maine late Tuesday through Thursday and intensify over time. Heavy, wet snow is expected to fall, especially overnight Wednesday into Thursday where accumulations will be greatest. This will bring a threat of power outages to some parts of the state.
Heavy snow, rain headed for Maine this weekend Original
Winter isn’t done with us quite yet! After accumulating snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning, we have a short break today before another significant system moves in Saturday. This storm is larger and has more moisture than the one earlier this week. That means we are looking at more precipitation, in terms of both snow and rain. This burst of snow will be beneficial to ski areas and other businesses that rely on wintry precipitation.
Plowable amounts of snow coming to Maine this weekend Original
So far, this winter has been a struggle for snow lovers, but this lame winter is about to get a little spicier over the weekend. No doubt you’ve heard about the possible storm, it’s the talk of the town. While it’s still a couple days away, the pieces to this puzzle are beginning to come together and we have more clarity and details on how this will unfold. Low pressure is currently tracking through the south and will continue east over the next couple of days.
Storm continues Monday, with lingering snow showers expected through the evening
We are in the middle of the first big snowstorm of the winter season. While the storm will weaken and wind down late Monday morning, lingering snow showers can be expected Monday afternoon and through Monday night too. A lot of the coastline was spared from heavy accumulations, but it will be a little slushy out there. Inland towns were pasted Sunday night with heavy, wet snow. Roads are way more difficult to navigate and there are numerous school delays and cancellations.

As of the 5 a.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center has determined that Lee is no longer a tropical system. It has transitioned into a nor’easter. The outer edge of the rain shield has made it to the Maine coastline, and it’s now working inland.

Twinsies, More snow on the way for Maine
WEATHER-BLOG One storm is in the books, but several more inches will fall this weekend. MAINE, USA — Twins! I'm an expert on them and can spot them anywhere. While no two storms are alike, the next storm we get this weekend has a lot of similarities as the one that just dropped a swath of snow through New England. NCM It's originating from the same area, organizing in the Midwest.
Several more inches of snow on the way
WEATHER-BLOG The active week continues with the next storm arriving late Wednesday night. This storm plans to drop several plowable inches of snow. MAINE, USA — We've had some baby storms over the last few days, but bigger ones are on the way. The first of two will roll in around midnight tonight. It starts off very light, in fact I only expect to see around an inch of snow on the ground by daybreak. The storm track has shifted a little farther south.
A busy week of snow chances
WEATHER-BLOG Storms will roll through New England this week, several inches of snow expected between now and Sunday. MAINE, Maine — "Stay on you toes", "buckle up", the cliches will be flying this week with several storms threatening New England. We already had one pass through last evening and thin icy glazes made a mess of the evening commute. I'm concerned the same thing could happen again this evening as another round of light snow and freezing drizzle passes through.
Dangerous ice expected Sunday in Maine
WEATHER-BLOG Record highs possible Saturday then dangerous ice on Sunday, we've got a lot to follow this weekend. MAINE, Maine — Unless you live under a rock, you know by now significant ice will threaten Maine this weekend. We picked up on the signal almost a week ago and have been talking about it ever since. We're pretty much locked in now for dangerous ice to fall over parts of Maine late Saturday night into Sunday.
Ice threat looms in maine for the weekend
WEATHER-BLOG Another round of light snow will fall today, but bigger concerns for ice and snow exist over the weekend. MAINE, Maine — An offshore storm and some upper level energy are dropping more snow on us today. The two really don't link up that well so we won't see a lot, but enough to make many roads slippery again and slow travel especially during the morning.
More Maine snow this weekend
MAINE, USA — For the last few days this storm has been showing lots of potential. But it doesn't appear like it will all gel together in time. Low pressure will form in the Deep South, but remain weak and strung out as sit travels north into the Mid-Atlantic. Mid-level energy will phase with the storm and strengthen it, but not until it's a little too far off the coast. Thus, just minor accumulation is expected this time around.
Next Maine snow threat: This Weekend
WEATHER-BLOG A couple of quiet days to finish the week, but more snow is possible over the weekend. MAINE, USA — While many are still licking their wounds from the last storm that dropped a foot of snow over much of Southern Maine. The next storm system is taking shape in the Deep South. Low pressure is gathering moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, getting ready to eject north up the Appalachians and threaten the Northeast with snow over the weekend.
Snow in Maine today, Amounts going up
MAINE, USA — Low pressure is developing along a frontal boundary to our south this morning. Mild and moist air is traveling north, battling with cold, dry air over Northern New England. Overrunning, advection snow will spread in this morning and creep north through the day. The northern edge will have a tough time penetrating Eastern and Central Maine, but gradual saturation will overcome the bone dry lower levels and snow will reach as far north as the Central Highlands this evening.
Winter resumes, snow on the way for Maine
WEATHER-BLOG Temperatures have dropped again and a few inches of snow is expected Tuesday. MAINE, Maine — It was a very strange weekend with epic rain and very warm temperatures. But temperatures dropped like a rock and Winter is back and here to stay for a while. The wind has been the big story over the last 24 hours and it continues to gust and deliver a very cold airmass. Highs today will only manage the lower 30s. Getting bigger buzz is the snow potential.
Drenched this weekend in Maine
MAINE, Maine — The cold is deep over New England, but sadly it will go wasted before we can squeeze out any snow from it. High pressure responsible for delivering the cold air will drift east, a bad direction if you like snow. I'd like to see the high anchor itself to our north, in southern Canada. This would lock in the cold and be a nice overrunning snow machine. Not gonna happen. NCM A little drizzle is possible through the evening, but the steady rain holds off until overnight.
Two day weather storm brings heavy snow to Maine
WEATHER-BLOG A storm will impact the Northeast today and tomorrow. Many locations will receive over 6 inches of snow. MAINE, Maine — It's no secret, this has been one pain in the rear storm to pin down. Multiple phases and rounds have complicated the forecast landscape but we're finally starting to get some clarity. Last night, steady snow fell over Southern Maine. Most communities picked up an inch or or so, but parts of York County saw over 6 inches.
Snowy Thanksgiving in Maine, Another storm looms
WEATHER-BLOG We are in a stormy pattern with more chances in the pipeline. MAINE, Maine — Happy Thanksgiving. Some are waking up to no power after last night's storms. Thursday, low pressure is swirling through the Gulf of Maine, drawing in cold air and dropping snow over Maine. It won't last much longer, tapering off later this morning, but additional minor snow accumulations are likely. Please drive safely today. NCM Here's a look at today's timeline.
Many get a white Thanksgiving
WEATHER-BLOG A storm is about to move into Maine with rain and accumulating snow. MAINE, Maine — It's just about here, friends and family, turkey and all the fixings. It's a great day, but a stressful one, it'd be nice if Mother Nature would keep the tranquil weather coming. Nope, she's throwing a storm at us. NCM Don't worry about today, it'll be fine. In fact, precipitation will hold off until around dark and when it arrives, it will be wet.
Snow possible Thanksgiving morning in Maine
WEATHER-BLOG One storm is departing but another one threatens us later this week. Rain and snow are likely again late Wednesday into Thursday. MAINE, Maine — Friends and family are coming to town, you have errands to run, it's a busy week and the last thing you need is a storm to complicate things. The weekend storm may be departing but another one looms on the horizon and may cause travel problems Wednesday night through Thanksgiving morning.
Messy storm threatens Maine this weekend
WEATHER-BLOG Another storm makes a run at Maine on Sunday with cold rain and wet snow. MAINE, Maine — After a few quiet days, our active storm pattern looks to resume this weekend. Another storm will form to our south, flare up when it hits the coast and then track through the Gulf of Maine Sunday and Sunday night. NCM While the track is favorable for snow and winds will remain north or northeasterly through the event, the lack of deep cold will limit the snow potential over much of New England.
Icy Maine mix to start the week
WEATHER-BLOG A messy storm system will drop snow and ice on Maine late Monday and early Tuesday. MAINE, USA — Most of Maine has already seen the first snow of the season, but ice has been elusive. Another storm is rolling our way and while there will be some snow from it, ice has me more concerned. The storm won't be a large one and won't have much precipitation. But, when it comes to ice, it doesn't take much to cause problems. NCM Light precip will break out this afternoon.
First snow of the season for Maine tomorrow night
WEATHER-BLOG A storm system will work through the Northeast tomorrow night with our first round of snow of the season. MAINE, USA — I'm not impressed with the snow risk with this storm at all. The trend for weaker and warmer began with this storm system yesterday and that trend has held. The storm just doesn't get it's act together until it's too late and east. Overrunning precipitation will arrive tomorrow afternoon. With mild temps in the 40s it will mostly be in the form of light rain.
Keeping an eye on the snow; pinning down what the end of the wee
WEATHER-BLOG A storm will threaten Maine Friday morning with our first snow of the season. MAINE, USA — A lot of buzz surrounds the snow chance later this week, and rightfully so. It's tough to pin down how impactful a storm this one will be. But as I dig through the new computer guidance I've noticed some interesting trends. We receive new computer information several times a day and the info since last evening has trended weaker and warmer. The key for me is with the mid-level trough.
Late week storm; snowflakes possible
WEATHER-BLOG Cold temperatures and the first snow of the season threaten Maine later this week. MAINE, USA — Temperatures are continuing to slide as we enter a new month, and later this week abnormally cold air will invade the East. The actual temperatures will be more similar to December numbers, highs in the 30s. weathermodels.com Even more intriguing is our first snow threat of the season.
Powerful storm and more power outages for Maine
WEATHER-BLOG Another week, another potent storm moves in with heavy rain and very strong winds. MAINE, Maine — We can't seem to catch a break this month. October has offered a storm a week and those storms have been quite nasty. This one will follow suit with periods of heavy rain and the potential for damaging wind gusts beginning Thursday morning and lasting into Friday afternoon. The key to this storm is a warm front.
Season's first nor'easter knocks out power across Maine
MAINE, Maine — The season's first nor'easter is pounding Maine with strong winds and heavy rain that began Wednesday night and continue to gain momentum early this morning. The fast-moving storm as of 3:00 a.m. had already knocked out power to almost 15,000 Central Maine Power customers, the majority of them in York county.
Autumn storm blasts Maine with wind and rain
WEATHER-BLOG Get ready, we're about to be slammed with wind and rain late tonight and Thursday morning. MAINE, Maine — Sorry folks, the storm is still coming and it's going to be a powerful one. Rain and wind will ramp up overnight, peak tomorrow morning and taper tomorrow afternoon. So, it's a relatively fast mover but it will be intense for a few hours. You hear us talk about how track is critical with Winter storms, it determines where the rain-snow line will set-up.
Maine Nor'easter will bring rain, wind and power outages
WEATHER-BLOG A strong storm will impact Maine with rain, wind and potential power outages Wednesday night through Thursday. MAINE, Maine — We lucked out last week, avoiding a nasty storm by about 100 miles. Much of Southern New England is still recovering from rain, wind and pounding surf. Now it's our turn. Thankfully, this week's storm is much faster moving but it will still present numerous problems for us.

Dorian: A Maine Impact?
WEATHER Dorian continues to batter the Bahamas but there's a chance it affects Maine over the weekend. Dorian did a little weakening last night but it's still battering the northern Bahamas as it sits about 100 miles east of West Palm Beach, FL. The storm will begin moving north over the next 24 hours, mirroring the east coast of Florida and the southeastern US, with a potential landfall in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Flooding rain threat tonight through tomorrow morning
WEATHER Tropical moisture, moving up the East Coast, will result in very heavy rain tonight through tomorrow morning. The tropics are heating up and moisture from an offshore tropical storm will get sucked west dumping heavy rain over New England tonight. NCM Erin was upgraded to a Tropical Storm last night. The core of the storm will remain offshore and not make a landfall on the East Coast. But, an inbound trough will act like a magnet and suck it's moisture back to the west.
Severe Storm Risk This Afternoon
WEATHER Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and they could get strong. The atmosphere will be ripe this afternoon for thunderstorm development and it's looking like several of them could get nasty. NCM The 70 degree dewpoint isotherm will bulge north through New England this afternoon pushing tropical air into Southern Maine. This, along with rising temps, will provide fuel for an approaching warmfront to spark numerous showers and thunderstorms.
Downpours this afternoon for Southern Maine
WEATHER Gusty storms brought down trees and powerlines in Eastern Maine yesterday. Today Southern Maine may see them. The storms were powerful yesterday afternoon over Downeast Maine and many are waking up without power. Early this morning, Emera Maine is showing over 9000 customers in the dark. Most of the damage was done in coastal Hancock County where numerous trees toppled over.
Storms Possible in Northern Maine Today
WEATHER Gusty storms may develop later today over Northern & Eastern Maine. A frontal system will work in later today and may initiate some stronger thunderstorms over the northern half of the State through the evening. NCM While a few showers will be around before noon, the storm threat doesn't get going until we get into some daytime heating.
Dangerous heat through the weekend
WEATHER Serious heat and humidity through the weekend. Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Watches have been issued for sections of Maine and New Hampshire this weekend. NCM The combination of temperature and humidity will create "feels-like" temps around or over 100 degrees. When it gets that hot, you've got to take it seriously. Reserve strenuous outdoor activities for the early morning hours. Don't forget to check on your elderly neighbors.
Could it hit 100 degrees this weekend? GUTNER BLOG
WEATHER Triple H's will surge back in tomorrow and near record breaking heat is expected over the weekend. The last time the temp hit 100 in Maine was back in 2011. I remember that day well. I was working in Boston and doing live weather hits from Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA. The temp hit 103, the second hottest day ever for the Boston area. The heat was unlike anything I had ever felt.
Wondering what those smoky skies over Maine are all about?
WEATHER Wildfire smoke from Northern Canada and Alaska will limit and filter the sun today. What should be a perfectly sunny day, won't be. Large fires in Northern Canada and Alaska are burning. Prevailing winds have guided the smoke from these fires south into Northern New England and the Great Lakes. NCM Smoke particles refract light into vibrant oranges and reds, leading to amazing sunrises and sunsets. But during the day, it filters the sun's rays, giving a milky and hazy appearance to the sky.
Damaging Storms Possible Today | Gutner Blog
WEATHER A big warm up is coming today. Along with the temperature and humidity rise, gusty storms may rip through later on. This Spring has been anything but warm. But not only is it going to warm up today, we're also going to get our first taste of Summer. NCM It's been over a month since it hit 70 degrees in Portland and you have to go back to last Autumn for the last 80 degree day in both Portland and Bangor. There's a solid chance that some Western Maine towns do just that later today.
March or May? | Gutner Blog
WEATHER A Spring Nor'easter moves through with rain, wet snow and record-breaking cold temperatures. When the weather story includes snow and temps in the lower 40s, you'd think it was the month of March. But it's not. It's May. There's been a lot of talk of snow, but many of us will only see cold rain. The snow looks confined to the higher foothills and mountainous areas. Sorry, no records set in the snow department. I know you're soooo disappointed. NCM There will be records set today though.
Flooding still a concern | GUTNER BLOG
WEATHER So far this Spring the flooding has been minor, but more rain over the coming days could change that. It's pretty incredible how quickly the snow has disappeared from the mountains and north over the last week. NOW: NCM One Week Ago: NCM Despite the snow melt and the recent rainy weather, we've been able to avoid significant flooding issues along our rivers.
More Snow Tonight | GUTNER BLOG
WEATHER Hard to believe, but another round of snow is on the way. Me while I type this. Looking out across the landscape, it's hard to believe that it's April. Almost the entire State is covered in snow. NCM A little more is expected tonight as a compact clipper races through New England. NCM Snow will arrive this evening, it will first accumulate on existing snow and decks, then greasy coatings will form on the roads after the sun goes down.
