We are witnessing a watershed moment for the gig economy. An agreement between the Transport Workers’ Union and the two biggest food delivery platforms in Australia, DoorDash and Uber Eats – which together hold 70 per cent of the market – could see the first minimum standards established for gig workers in any sector. It represents a fairer and more sustainable pathway for thousands of workers.

1 Introduction An ongoing puzzle within the study of work and job quality is to understand why workers tolerate objectively ‘poor’ quality jobs, and even report satisfaction, meaning or enjoyment from such work (Budd 2011; Warhurst, Mathieu, et al. 2022). These debates have extended into the gig economy (e.g., Dunn 2020; Goods et al. 2019), where workers perform one-off jobs (gigs), normally for piece rates, organised via digital platforms.
