PEQUOT LAKES, Minn. — A central Minnesota school board is putting an operating referendum before voters in November using a new state aid program that aims to increase district revenue and lower local property taxes. The Pequot Lakes School Board voted unanimously Monday, July 6, for a resolution authorizing the new referendum revenue and calling a special election for Nov. 3. The strategy hinges on a program created during the 2026 legislative session called the Seasonal Tax Base Replacement Aid.

Well, we made it. That’s a 250-year check mark that can be jotted down in the history books. As I’m typing this, it’s another Monday, and I’m wrapping up another week’s stories, photos and uploads. It also feels like a week that was much busier than most. But there was a significant milestone that was crossed. Over the weekend and in a grand display, the nation collectively celebrated a quarter-millennium of American history.

50 years ago: July 8, 1976 Mr. and Mrs. Gary Gorman of Pequot Lakes were the parents of Pequot’s only “Bicentennial baby.” Katie Lynn was born at 6:15 p.m. July 4. Pequot Lakes enjoyed perfect weather and large crowds for its two-day Bicentennial celebration July 3 and 4. One of the largest parades was held with more than 90 units, and the largest crowd was estimated when all the streets in town were lined with cars.
