What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paid job was a morning anchor in MN - living a block from the station so I could trudge thru snowdrifts before the plows got going.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! First job in Minnesota in '87 - but not for long. Still think we should keep one around for when all the computers crash!

How is social media changing news?

It's revolutionized the speed of gathering & spreading info. We can connect with our audience and build understanding and trust.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Mary Tyler Moore (since my first job was in MN)

What does it mean to be a journalist?

We are connectors. We connect viewers and readers with critical info and each other.

Endless list: Hootsuite, Spreecast, GooglePlus, Google Voice, Audioboo, Fotobabble, Ustream, Instagram, Vine

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, for both consuming info and chatting about it. Great tool in breaking news and for live events. Enjoy Twitter # chats too!

Why did you become a journalist?

I love being in the center of the information flow, and connecting people with what they need to know. Doing it well is so important.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I worked for the local community newspaper before I graduated from high school, with 6 articles published before I entered college.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Some of the storms where I've stayed up with viewers streaming live from home to keep them connected to the best info and each other.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be ready to work holidays and sacrifice a lot of family time to pursue your story telling passion.

9 am

Beach or Mountains

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

As a local news anchor people think limo hair and makeup and a truck that rolls up and dumps millions in cash.
