If there is one thing that will save local newspapers, it is well-sourced, quality reporting, something that has suffered as local journalism has suffered. The Express-News could easily have been beaten on this national story in its own backyard by any number of national outlets. But it wasn't, because the paper was doing its job. This is the journalism that should win awards.
