Optometry students’ perceptions of patient-centred clinical training at a South African university: a cross-sectional survey
Purpose Patient-centred care (PCC) is an approach to healthcare that emphasizes understanding patients’ needs and perspectives, effective communication, shared decision-making, and collaborative patient–practitioner relationships. Developing these orientations during health professions education may support students’ preparedness for patient-centred clinical practice.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology
EOS is an open-source software package for a variety of computational tasks in flavor physics. In this article, we describe new developments for version 1.1 of this software and discuss changes with respect to version 1.0. These developments and changes include theory predictions for additional decay and scattering processes, such as semileptonic charm decays, hadronic tau decays, and $e^+e^- \to$ hadrons scattering.

Non-Maturing Deposits: Predictive Modelling and Risk Management
1. Introduction A non-maturing deposit (NMD) is a type of deposit that has no explicit expiration date and can be kept for extended periods of time. The fact that these deposits have no known maturity ex ante makes forecasting and managing the risks of NMDs troublesome. Furthermore, these deposits contribute significantly to a bank’s balance sheet and provide a straightforward means of generating funding.

Discovery of a Glyphosate Oxidase in Nature
Glyphosate is the most used herbicide on Earth. After a half-century of use we know only two biodegradative pathways, each of which appears to degrade glyphosate incidentally. One pathway begins with oxidation of glyphosate catalyzed by glycine oxidase (GO). To date, no naturally-occurring GO enzymes preferentially oxidize glyphosate but nonetheless are sufficiently active to initiate its degradation.

Separating states in astronomical sources using hidden Markov models: with a case study of flaring and quiescence on EV Lac
We present a new method to distinguish between different states (e.g., high and low, quiescent and flaring) in astronomical sources with count data. The method models the underlying physical process as latent variables following a continuous-space Markov chain that determines the expected Poisson counts in observed light curves in multiple passbands. For the underlying state process, we consider several autoregressive processes, yielding continuous-space hidden Markov models of varying complexity.

An analysis of whether the Two‐Pillar Solution is an equitable solution for developing countries in addressing tax challenges of a digital economy
Abstract The purpose of this research report is to determine whether key elements of the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD) Two‐Pillar Solution are equitable to developing countries. The key principles contained in the Two‐Pillar Solution will be critically discussed to determine whether these rules are designed in a manner that: I. Allows for appropriate and acceptable tax competition for developing countries to fairly compete with larger economies; and II.
Ethiopian Asylum Seeker Deceived by Immigration Official in South Africa, Court Orders Case Review
Tsegaye Esyas, an Ethiopian asylum seeker in South Africa, was misled into confessing that he was in the country illegally by a senior immigration official, Annelise van Dyk. The Western Cape High Court has condemned Van Dyk's conduct as "repugnant and objectionable" and ordered that Esyas's case be reevaluated. Esyas, who does not speak English, was pressured by Van Dyk into signing documents he did not understand, leading him to attempt suicide out of despair.
Prediction of cognitive decline in older breast cancer survivors: the thinking and living with cancer study

We developed a model to predict breast cancer survivors who would experience CRCD after systematic treatment.

Toward a complete description of b → uℓ− $$ \overline{\nu} $$ within the Weak Effective Theory decays
Journal of High Energy Physics, Aug 2023 We fit the available data on exclusive semileptonic b → uℓ− $$ \overline{\nu} $$ decays within the Standard Model and in the Weak Effective Theory. Assuming Standard Model dynamics, we find $$ \left|{V}_{ub}\right|={3.59}_{-0.12}^{+0.13}\times {10}^{-3} $$ . Lifting this assumption, we obtain stringent constraints on the coefficients of the ubℓν sector of the Weak Effective Theory.
What's Keeping Kids Up at Night?
Background Although it is well established that healthy sleep promotes positive mental health, little is known about how sleep operates in children and adolescents who experience a range of psychosocial stressors. This study examined the association between sleep duration and serious mental illness (SMI) and how this pathway is moderated by psychosocial stressors (discrimination, bullying, and perceived school and neighborhood safety).
Recurring outbursts of the supernova impostor AT 2016blu in NGC 4559
We present the first photometric analysis of the supernova (SN) impostor AT 2016blu in NGC 4559. This transient was discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search in 2012 and has continued its outbursts since then. Optical and infrared photometry of AT 2016blu reveals at least 19 outbursts in 2012–2022. Similar photometry from 1999 to 2009 shows no outbursts, indicating that the star was relatively stable in the decade before discovery.

Critical evaluation of the chemical composition of acid mine drainage for the development of statistical correlations linking electrical conductivity with acid mine drainage concentrations
The design an effective treatment processes for the remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) requires an understanding of the composition of the AMD water. The pH and elemental composition of AMD waters are site specific and are dependent on the regional geology, and environmental factors. To establish the chemical and physical characteristics of two AMD sites located in the Mpumalanga coal mining region, South Africa, samples were taken between February 2018 to April 2019.
Trail running injury risk factors: a living systematic review
Results Nineteen eligible studies were included, of which 10 studies investigated injury risk factors among 2 785 participants. Significant intrinsic factors associated with injury are: more running experience, level A runner and higher total propensity to sports accident questionnaire (PAD-22) score. Previous history of cramping and postrace biomarkers of muscle damage is associated with cramping. Younger age and low skin phototypes are associated with sunburn.

A giant NLR gene confers broad-spectrum resistance to Phytophthora sojae in soybean - Nature Communications
Abstract Phytophthora root and stem rot caused by P. sojae is a destructive soybean soil-borne disease found worldwide. Discovery of genes conferring broad-spectrum resistance to the pathogen is a need to prevent the outbreak of the disease. Here, we show that soybean Rps11 is a 27.7-kb nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat (NBS-LRR or NLR) gene conferring broad-spectrum resistance to the pathogen.

Fas ligand-mediated immune surveillance by T cells is essential for the control of spontaneous B cell lymphomas
Abstract Loss of function of the tumor suppressor gene PRDM1 (also known as BLIMP1) or deregulated expression of the oncogene BCL6 occurs in a large proportion of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cases. However, targeted mutation of either gene in mice leads to only slow and infrequent development of malignant lymphoma, and despite frequent mutation of BCL6 in activated B cells of healthy individuals, lymphoma development is rare.
