Case Report: Inhaled salbutamol in the successful treatment of life-threatening acute hyperkalaemia in an anaesthetised horse
Introduction As the predominant intracellular cation, potassium is responsible for maintenance of normal resting cell membrane potential (RMP) (1). The body employs a range of homeostatic mechanisms to maintain potassium concentrations ([K+]) within a tight range. In the presence of certain pathologies, these homeostatic mechanisms may become overwhelmed, and elevated plasma [K+] (hyperkalaemia) can have important consequences.

When blood samples clot before analysis, they are rejected, which delays treatment decisions and necessitates repeated sampling.

Exploring the Dynamics of Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reactions via Single-Molecule Fluorescence Microscopy: Catalytic Efficiency from SM-TOF Measurements
Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! The study of the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions at the single molecule (SM) level is an emerging topic of research. (1−4) For instance, employing high-resolution spatial microscopy in real-time, SM palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions yielding a highly fluorescent dye have been observed.
Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance markers pfcrt K76T and pfaat1 S258L in southern Rwanda, 2010 to 2023
In many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance marker pfcrt K76T disappeared within a decade of ceased chloroquine use. Pfaat1 S258L has recently been implicated as another chloroquine resistance marker. Both genes may affect parasite susceptibility to partner drugs in artemisinin-based combination therapy. Rwanda abolished chloroquine in 2001, since 2006 the first-line antimalarial is artemether-lumefantrine.
Yield of family screening for dilated cardiomyopathy: 10-year experience at a multidisciplinary cardiogenetic outpatient clinic - Netherlands Heart Journal
Abstract Current family screening approaches in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) depend on the presence or absence of a familial genetic variant, in which variant pathogenicity (i.e. benign or pathogenic) classification drives screening recommendations. However, this approach has never been systematically evaluated.
The VMC Survey – LI. Classifying extragalactic sources using a probabilistic random forest supervised machine learning algorithm
As the depth and field of view of survey telescopes continues to improve, it becomes increasingly more unfeasible for astronomers to manually verify every individual source. Separating the extragalactic from the non-extragalactic is important for population studies and for the study of individual systems. Identifying galaxies, and whether they are hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or not, allows us to study how galaxies evolve over cosmic time and what role AGN have to play in this process.

Mitochondrial bioenergetics are not associated with myofibrillar protein synthesis rates
Introduction Skeletal muscle tissue represents approximately 40% of total body mass and is essential for locomotion, overall metabolism, and glucose homeostasis. Skeletal muscle mass is regulated by the balance between muscle protein synthesis and breakdown.

Comparison of intramyocellular lipid metabolism in patients with diabetes and male athletes - Nature Communications
Abstract Despite opposing insulin sensitivity and cardiometabolic risk, both athletes and patients with type 2 diabetes have increased skeletal myocyte fat storage: the so-called “athlete’s paradox”. In a parallel non-randomised, non-blinded trial (NCT03065140), we characterised and compared the skeletal myocyte lipid signature of 29 male endurance athletes and 30 patients with diabetes after undergoing deconditioning or endurance training respectively.
Parameter subset reduction for imaging-based digital twin generation of patients with left ventricular mechanical discoordination - BioMedical Engineering OnLine
We utilized and expanded upon an existing framework for parameter subset reduction to determine a subset of parameters of the CircAdapt model which were identifiable from LV cavity volume and regional strain measurements of patients with LV mechanical discoordination. The obtained parameter subset included cardiac output, global LV activation duration, regional mechanical activation delay, and regional LV myocardial constitutive properties.
Olfactory learning in Pieris brassicae butterflies is dependent on the intensity of a plant-derived oviposition cue
Published March 12, 2024 | Version v1 Software Open Butterflies, like many insects, use gustatory and olfactory cues innately to assess the suitability of an oviposition site and are able to associate colours and leaf shapes with an oviposition reward. Studies on other insects have demonstrated that the quality of the reward is a crucial factor in forming associative memory.

Leukaemia exposure alters the transcriptional profile and function of BCR::ABL1 negative macrophages in the bone marrow niche
Abstract Macrophages are fundamental cells of the innate immune system that support normal haematopoiesis and play roles in both anti-cancer immunity and tumour progression. Here we use a chimeric mouse model of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and human bone marrow (BM) derived macrophages to study the impact of the dysregulated BM microenvironment on bystander macrophages.

Collagen Protein Ingestion during Recovery from Exercise... : Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise
Acute exercise strongly increases muscle protein synthesis rates, thereby facilitating the skeletal muscle adaptive response to prolonged exercise training (1,2). Protein ingestion has been shown to further augment postexercise muscle protein synthesis rates, leading to net muscle protein accretion during recovery from exercise (3,4).
