California has the largest Native American population in the country, with more than 700,000 people and over a hundred federally-recognized tribes calling the Golden State home. And for decades, efforts have been underway to develop a new space to highlight the experience and culture of Native people on their own terms. In April Governor Gavin Newsom, in collaboration with tribes, broke ground on the California Indian Heritage Center.

Art advocates call for more funding for creatives as California’s budget deadline looms

California lawmakers are working to finalize the state’s budget ahead of the June 15 deadline, as various interest groups call on the legislature to preserve funding. One of the items that may be on the chopping block is funding for arts and culture, which advocates say has been stagnant for decades. The California Arts Council was founded 50 years ago and is the state’s only public arts grant provider, with money accessible to all 58 counties.
