Are Creationists Anti-Science?
Science and Faith Are Close Allies If Christianity is true, we must do our scientific work in light of the truth that God reveals himself in creation (general revelation) and in Scripture (special revelation). We must be scientific realists, not anti-realists; we must be open to God acting supernaturally and not merely operate as methodological naturalists. Above all, we must reject any ultimate contradiction between the order of creation and the witness of Scripture.
Evolution Is a Question of Philosophy, Not Biology
An Influential Thinker The publication of Darwin’s The Origin of Species1 was as revolutionary as the publication of Copernicus’s On the Revolution of Heavenly Spheres. Yet as revolutionary as the shift from geocentricity to heliocentricity was, it pales in comparison with the impact of Darwin’s ideas.
Why Should Christians Want to Help the Poor?
The Commands of Scripture Why should Christians want to help the poor? The Bible gives us two kinds of reasons. First, there are the general commands of Scripture. Jesus said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39). If we love someone who is poor, we will want to help that poor person. Jesus also said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16).
Is It Morally Right to Impose My Pro-life Convictions on Others?
A Double Standard A lot of people say things like they personally oppose abortion, but they wouldn’t want to impose their morals on others. Now, imagine how silly it would sound if I said to you, “I personally oppose slavery, but if you want to own a slave, we shouldn’t legislate against slavery,” or “I personally oppose spousal abuse, but if you want to do it, I don’t think the law should stop you from doing it.” Right away you would think there’s something wrong with your moral compass.
Should Christians Practice Total Abstinence from Alcoholic Beverages?
A Personal Question This is a personal question, and the answer will vary from individual to individual. It will depend in part on knowing one’s self, one’s personal history, one’s family history, and one’s cultural context. Many people who have come to realize that they are alcoholics1 find that they must practice total abstinence in order to avoid being drunk again. One of these people is former President George W.

How Trump’s Border Wall Will Block Illegal Pedestrian Immigration
The wall works Some videos on YouTube show one man cutting through a section of border wall and another man climbing over the wall with a long ladder. Viewers might conclude that "walls do not work" and are a "waste of money." But these conclusions are not true. President Trump successfully built about 458 miles of new, highly effective border wall made of steel bollards placed closely together. The six-inch square bollards are hollow pipes that are mostly 30 feet tall (18 feet in a few places).
10 Things You Should Know about Your Conscience
This article is part of the 10 Things You Should Know series. A Shoulder Angel? Most people probably think of the conscience as the “shoulder angel.” Comic strips and films often depict an angel dressed in white on a person’s right shoulder and a demon dressed in red and holding a pitchfork on the person’s left shoulder. The angel represents the person’s conscience, and the demon represents temptation.
20 Reasons to Vote for Republicans-- and Especially for Donald Trump
This election is more than a choice between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. It is also a choice between two very different views of government. To move the United States toward a kind of government that is best for the nation, it is most important that Donald Trump wins the presidency again, but it is also essential that Republicans win elections to the House and Senate and many state and local offices.
How Much Should Christians Tithe?
Both the Old and New Testaments teach that God’s people should give away some of what they earn. In the Old Testament, God required the people of Israel to give a “tithe” (that is, one-tenth) of their crops each year: You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. (Deut.

Why Republicans Want a Border Wall and Democrats Do Not
So many illegal immigrants have crossed our southern border that both Republicans and Democrats now claim that they have a plan that will “secure the border.” But there is a difference. Republicans want to complete the wall that President Trump started to build, and Democrats have hindered and blocked the border wall again and again. After four years under Trump and nearly four years under Biden, it should be clear that Republicans will actually close the border and Democrats will not.
Are Christians Prohibited from Getting Tattoos? (Leviticus 19)
This article is part of the Tough Passages series. Listen to the Passage Read the Passage You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD. —Lev. 19:28 Tattoos Sometimes people read a statement about tattoos in the Old Testament and wonder if it applies today. The Mosaic covenant has been terminated with the death of Christ, and we are now under the new covenant.
What Does the Bible Say about Alcohol?
Warnings against Drunkenness Several New Testament passages specify the moral evil of becoming drunk: I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is . . . [a] drunkard. (1 Cor. 5:11) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery. (Eph. 5:18) In addition, Paul includes “drunkards” among those who will not “inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:10).
Christian Ethics
What Does the Bible Teach about How to Live in Today’s World? How should Christians live when the surrounding culture is increasingly hostile to Christian moral values? Granted, the Bible is our guide—but how can we know if we are interpreting it rightly with regard to ethical questions about wealth and poverty, marriage and divorce, birth control, abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, ethical business practices, environmental stewardship, and dozens of other issues?

The Ethics of Jesus: What Do the Four Gospels Reveal?
Ethical Teaching in the Gospels When speaking of the “ethics” of the Gospels, one need not surmise that each of the Gospels, or even the four-Gospel canon, presents a sophisticated moral system in a highly organized form of presentation. Such a systematic presentation would seem to be precluded by their narrative genre, which renders any such body of teaching more indirect and implicit in nature.
Biblical Arguments for a Global Flood
Since the rise of higher criticism in 18th century Europe, there has been a tendency for Christians to deny the universal nature of the flood recorded in Genesis 6-9. This has only accelerated since the publication of Darwin’s magnum opus, On the Origin of Species (1859). Some Christians go as far as denying the historicity of Genesis 1-11, notably the liberal scholar and regular BioLogos contributor Peter Enns.
Assessing the Arguments for and against Physician-Assisted Suicide
4 Arguments against Euthanasia In addition to arguments that can be made from the Bible against physician-assisted suicide (Ex. 20:13, “You shall not murder”), four additional arguments can be made against euthanasia: Most people have a conviction that it is wrong to murder another human being. An argument can be made from this general conviction to the specific application that it is wrong to murder elderly or terminally ill people.
5 Things Science Cannot Explain (but Theism Can)
The Limits of Science and Danger of Scientism The heart of scientism is the conviction that science can explain virtually everything. If there is not a valid scientific explanation for an event or state, then that is not properly an object of our knowledge. In reality, though, there are many things that science cannot explain. And the problem is not that we lack sufficient data—the problem is that these are the sorts of things that science cannot explain, even in principle.

Understanding the First and Last Adam
The First Adam, the Image Bearer Adam was the first image bearer, and that fact matters for what happened next. God placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it (Gen. 2:8, 15), he provided for him (Gen. 2:16), and he gave a prohibition about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17). Adam gave names to birds and beasts (Gen. 2:20), yet there was no suitable helpmate to be found among them.

Trump's Legacy: Plan A or Plan B?
I voted for Donald Trump twice. I published several op-ed pieces defending him and his policies. I spoke in support of Trump on podcasts and before live audiences. I do not regret those decisions, and I remain convinced that, given the alternatives (Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden), supporting Trump in 2016 and 2020 was the right choice. What Trump Did Right I also think that Trump accomplished a remarkable number of good things for America. He placed three outstanding justices on the Supreme Court.
Reading the Creation Story on the Shoulders of Giants
Voices from the Past, Wisdom for the Present The ESV Church History Study Bible is grounded upon the basic point that we have much to learn from those who have gone before us. Charles Spurgeon once encouraged his students to read commentaries, noting that the Holy Spirit is not an exclusive or individual gift to any one believer. Since we know that the Holy Spirit teaches us, we can know that the Holy Spirit teaches others.

What Should We Keep in Mind When Considering the Ethics of the Bible?
The Ethics of the Bible When we speak about the ethics in the Bible, we are not just thinking of the Old Testament law or of the Sermon on the Mount, nor do we only have in mind actual moral instructions, injunctions, and prohibitions. The ethics of the Bible is much wider than that and includes the advice of Solomon and other sages, and the stories of Bible characters whose exemplary behavior we should emulate, like David who knows how to forgive his enemies (see 1 Samuel 24 and 26).
Unpacking “My Body, My Choice”
This article is part of the Unpacking Culture series in which we examine a well-known axiom and weigh any true or positive aspects of it against any negative or misleading connotations of the phrase. Deconstructing a Pro-Abortion Slogan On a cold Saturday morning last April, I sat on a bench in Eastown Grand Rapids, Michigan, and took notes for an article as three young adults milled around a sign with a picture of an aborted baby.
What Our Pro-Life Predecessors Can Teach Us about Standing against Abortion
The Supply and Demand of Abortion Success on the abortion supply side—cutting down the number of abortion suppliers—is only part of the battle. Work on the demand side is at least as important, as our 19th-century pro-life predecessors realized. Reducing demand had two main parts: education and compassion. In 1850 some Americans believed that unborn children were just lumps in a womb until “quickening,” that time almost halfway through the pregnancy when a mother can feel the child moving.
A Letter to Christian Voters in Georgia
Dear Christian friend, On Tuesday, December 6, you have an opportunity to vote in a Georgia runoff election that will affect not just Georgia, but the whole nation. Both candidates (Sen. Rafael Warnock (D) and Herschel Walker (R)) profess themselves to be faithful Christians, and you might have trouble deciding which one to vote for. This letter contains my personal observations – as a professor who has taught classes in the Bible and theology for 45 years – about the issues at stake.
4 Questions about Headship and Head Coverings
This article is part of the Questions and Answers series. Q: What does it mean that the husband is the head of his wife? A: “I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God” (1 Cor.11:3).
Our Old Earth: Arguments for Billions of Years
ABSTRACT: The book of Genesis was not written to teach us the age of the earth, and so it can legitimately support either a young-earth or an old-earth view. Evidence from astronomy and various earth sciences, however, suggests that our universe and our earth are billions of years old. In the absence of a clear biblical stance on the issue, Christians should be willing to consider interpretations of Genesis 1 that fit with an old creation.
The Church’s Role in Making Abortion Unthinkable and Unneccessary
Lives Lost Since abortion was legalized in 1973, over 62 million babies have lost their lives. That means 62 million times or more a woman has made the decision—or felt like she had to make the decision—to end the life that she was carrying. Sixty-two million irreplaceable, unrepeatable lives. Our world has been denied the opportunity to know these precious souls and to be impacted for the good by these babies.
8 New Testament Passages That Support a Historical Adam and Eve
1. Luke 3:38 In one of the two New Testament genealogies of Jesus, Luke identifies Jesus as “the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli” (Luke 3:23).
Can Theistic Evolution and Original Sin Coexist?
Belief #1: Adam and Eve were never sinless human beings. Our friends who hold to theistic evolution maintain that Adam and Eve were ordinary human beings, doing sinful deeds for their entire lives just as all other human beings do. By contrast, the entire story of the creation of Adam and Eve as recorded in Genesis 1–2 indicates only blessing and favor from God, and gives no hint of the existence of any human sin or God’s judgment on sin. God created them, and “God blessed them” (Gen.

The Notion of Authority in God's Created Order
How God Set It Up Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. (Gen. 2:19–20) Have you ever thought about why this odd little story is included in Scripture?
10 Key Bible Verses on Scripture
This article is part of the Key Bible Verses series. All commentary sections adapted from the ESV Study Bible. 1. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Is Making Decisions All about Knowing God's Will?
Settling for Plan B? Once a year, my family and I put on our baseball hats, hop on the trolley, and head to downtown San Diego to attend a Padres game. At some point during the event, the three-cup game appears on the screen, bidding the fans to figure out which of three constantly moving cups hides a ball. No matter how hard I try, I cannot win the game. The frantic movement of the three cups leaves me dizzy and confused.
The Crushing Freedom of Decision-Making
Decision-Making Fatigue Sometimes things become so much a part of the fabric of our lives that we don’t even recognize them. Decisions are chief among them. They are so ubiquitous that we tend to drown out their prevalence and significance. In a self-initiated experiment, I decided to keep a running tally of the number of decisions I made throughout an average day. Before my feet even hit the ground, I had counted four: Do I sleep five more minutes? Do I shower now or after my morning walk?
