Crimes against children task force planned in Lee County

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — A new child protection task force is in the works in Lee County, aimed at streamlining the process of investigating and prosecuting crimes against children. The task force was proposed by District Attorney Jason Herring and Lee County Judge Staci Bevill. The Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office said child abuse cases can be complicated to prosecute because multiple agencies often have to work together.

BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) — A Noxubee County mayor is free on bond following his arrest for simple assault. Noxubee County Sheriff Tedrick Liddell confirmed the arrest of David Boswell. Investigators charged the mayor and another man, Edward Henley, with simple assault — a misdemeanor — in connection with an incident last week. The sheriff refused to go into further details about the incident, but Boswell and Henley accused each other of the crime.

Tupelo hosts Juneteenth brunch celebration at Farmer’s Depot

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — The Tupelo Juneteenth Freedom Celebration kicked off Friday in downtown Tupelo at the Farmer’s Depot. Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. It is celebrated on June 19 because that’s when Union soldiers came to Galveston, Texas, to tell the slaves there that they were free. “This doesn’t mean that this is not celebrating everyone,” said Jennifer Lawrence, Tupelo Juneteenth organizer.
