Surging Economic Losses From Extreme Floods Exacerbate Disparity in Poverty-Classified Regions Demanding Urgent Adaptation in China
1 Introduction Extreme floods can disrupt agricultural production, damage infrastructure, degrade aquatic biodiversity, and undermine socioeconomic stability (Barneveld et al., 2025; Desai et al., 2021; Pollack et al., 2025). Climate change is projected to intensify extreme precipitation events, thereby increasing the frequency and severity of flood disasters (IPCC, 2023; Ombadi et al., 2023; Rohde, 2023).
Type 1 immunity linked to CMV exposure improves long-term survival in sepsis without shock
Abstract Dysregulated immune responses are at the core of sepsis pathology and can drive both acute organ dysfunction and long-term morbidity and mortality. To better understand the association between specific immune histories, perturbations and sepsis outcomes, we combined immune phenotyping, functional cytokine production assays and antibody repertoire profiling.

Armed conflict accelerates cropland loss and food insecurity worldwide
Abstract Armed conflict is an escalating threat to global food security yet its impact on cropland dynamics is poorly understood at global scale. Here we combine annual high-resolution cropland maps (2000–2020) with more than 460,000 conflict events across 155 countries to assess how armed conflicts affect cropland loss and food security.
Inequality in clean cooking adoption across urban and rural China
Abstract Urban and rural areas are following increasingly divergent trajectories in the transition to clean cooking energy, reshaping patterns of sustainability and social equity. Using nationally representative 1% census micro-sample data from 2010 and 2020, we estimate prefecture-level adoption rates for urban and rural populations and compare absolute and relative gaps.
Statistics > Machine Learning
Modern prediction-driven decision systems often rely on black-box predictors, but a point forecast alone does not provide the uncertainty scale required for robust downstream decision-making. We build a score-calibrated robustness framework that converts any fixed point predictor into a decision-relevant uncertainty representation through distribution-free conformal calibration.
Gut microbiota and blood biomarkers as correlating factors in patients with postoperative delirium: analysis of three prospective observational studies
Abstract Postoperative delirium is associated with both gut microbiota alterations and Tau phosphorylation; however, how these factors interact and jointly contribute to postoperative delirium remains poorly understood. This prospective observational cohort study screened 491 patients aged ≥65 years undergoing elective laminectomy or hip or knee replacement under general or spinal anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital (2016–2020).

Case Report: A rare case of IgG4-related disease initially manifesting with diarrhea and jaundice
Abstract Background: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic immune-mediated fibrosing inflammatory disorder with multi-organ involvement. Due to highly variable and nonspecific clinical manifestations, atypical cases are prone to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. This study reports an IgG4-RD case presenting with rare initial symptoms of diarrhea and jaundice, aiming to enrich the clinical spectrum of atypical IgG4-RD and improve early differential diagnosis.
Fully passive received quantum access network based on reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution
Abstract Information-theoretically secure quantum access network (QAN) provides a multiple-user structure for large-scale key distribution. However, active reference-frame compensation and clock synchronization require extra devices and signals, increasing the complexity of the system and time/resource consumption. In this work, a fully passive received QAN comprising both free-space and fiber channels is demonstrated.
The Bacillus rugosus BPH-S36 genome, a symbiont enabling brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens ) adaptation to resistant rice
Abstract The brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) is a major pest of rice, and its adaptation to resistant rice varieties often involves symbiotic microorganisms. Bacillus rugosus strain BPH-S36, isolated from a BPH population IR56 (virulent on resistant rice variety IR56), has been shown to enhance host survival on resistant rice when introduced into a susceptible BPH population TN1.

Anthropogenic climate change accelerates the onset of global flood timing
Abstract Floods are among Earth’s most devastating natural disasters, with cascading societal and ecological impacts. Flood timing shifts amplify risks by disrupting preparedness, yet their global patterns remain largely unquantified. Using multi-model ensembles, we provide a global-scale assessment of flood timing changes under incremental warming (1.5 °C–4.0 °C).

Deconstruction of a spino-brain–spinal cord circuit that drives chronic pain
Abstract Tissue inflammation or nerve injury at the periphery can cause chronic pain. Although the spinal-cord-projecting neurons in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVMSC neurons) can promote pain chronification1,2,3,4, the pathway by which peripheral injury signals drive these neurons is poorly understood1,2,3,5.
Python metabolomics uncovers a conserved postprandial metabolite and gut–brain feeding pathway
|
Abstract Most mammals consume small and frequent meals. By contrast, pythons are ambush predators that exhibit extreme feeding and fasting patterns and provide a unique model for uncovering molecular mediators of the postprandial response1,2,3. Using untargeted metabolomics, we show that circulating levels of the metabolite para-tyramine-O-sulphate (pTOS) are increased more than 1,000-fold in pythons after a single meal.

Proteasome-guided haem signalling axis contributes to T cell exhaustion
|
Abstract The accumulation of depolarized mitochondria commits T cells to exhaustion1,2,3, yet the precise mechanism remains unclear. Here we find that exhausted CD8+ T cells increase proteasome activity owing to the accumulation of depolarized mitochondria, which drives the selective degradation of mitochondrial proteins and the release of regulatory haem through haemoprotein breakdown.

Abstract Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly lethal malignancy characterized by profound resistance to immunotherapy. Converting immunologically “cold” tumors into “hot” tumors by enhancing T cell infiltration represents a promising therapeutic strategy, yet the vascular mechanisms regulating immune recruitment in PDAC remain poorly defined.
RYK is a GPNMB receptor that drives MASH - Nature
Abstract The prevalence of metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is rising globally, yet effective treatments remain limited1. Here we found that systemic or hepatocyte-specific ablation of the gene encoding glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B (Gpnmb)—a top upregulated gene in MASH—protected mice from diet-induced MASH. Notably, MASH progression was driven specifically by the secreted GPNMB ectodomain (G-ECD), rather than full-length GPNMB.
