UAB medical student steps up in time of crisis
Written by: Teresa Hicks Media contact: Anna Jones In December of 2022, David Harmer went to the Salt Lake City International Airport to rent an SUV for a family Christmas trip. As Harmer, a father of four, was loading luggage into the backseat of the rental vehicle, he heard a ferocious roaring of an engine and squealing of tires. Moments later, he saw a 6,000-pound Chevrolet Suburban SUV smash into the row of rental cars within which he was standing.
The Only Solution to the Energy Crisis Is Public Ownership
Energy giants are forcing people into poverty while destroying the planet, and they’ll keep doing so as long as it turns them a profit. Windfall taxes aren’t enough – we need to put power in public hands. The cost of living crisis has highlighted the central role that our privatised energy system plays in organising society, acting as an engine of inequality. During 2022, BP and Shell made over £24 billion and £31 billion in profits, respectively, while millions were pushed into fuel poverty.

Happy Tuesday, friends! A couple of quick notes before getting into today's news: Our previous emails listed the on the wrong date. The event is scheduled for Jan. 29. Thank you to the sharp-eyed readers who brought this to our attention! Additionally, we ran into some technical issues yesterday resulting in some folks not receiving the Monday morning newsletter. We’re still working to figure out why this happened. With that said, all of our emails also live on the Madison Minutes website.
Is Coke ok?
Happy Monday, Madison! ICYMI: Culver's recently announced it will make the switch from Pepsi to Coca-Cola products at its restaurants. Earth shattering, I know. Before you freak out, Culver's Signature Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Dr. Pepper, and fresh brewed sweetened and unsweetened tea will still be available. What do you think of the switch? Personally, I'm team Diet Coke all the way and welcome a shakeup. — Hayley 📣 The Women's March on Madison.

☞ A Visual Quine
Quines are computer programs that, when run, output themselves. It’s a delightful feature of computing that these are even possible and they feel akin to magic or biology (if you want to go deep on quines, check out this website). I was therefore delighted to see that Will Byrd, a computer scientist at the University of Alabama Birmingham and a friend, created a prize for creative innovation in the world of quines: the 2022 QuIPS Prize.
Why a national care service must be a key part of our green new deal – LabourList
Social care in this country is in crisis. Covid has exposed structural issues within the system that have enabled the interests of shareholders to be prioritised over service users. Resolving the UK’s social care crisis is closely tied to mitigating and adapting to climate change, and should therefore be a key part of a green new deal. Even before the pandemic, austerity meant that social care was in a chronically underfunded and precarious state.
Let's Eat: Comfort from cashews: The Winnebago launches new vegan-friendly menu
The new menu at The Winnebago from chef Will Byrd combines seemingly disparate elements. Think vegan breakfast plates and gluten-free bread alongside meaty, eggy, cheesy buttery-biscuit sandwiches and grain bowls. It’s a cohesive whole, and inclusivity is key. “I wanted to expand the menu and add dishes for everyone, whether you eat meat or a gluten-free diet or vegetarian or junk food or healthy food,” said Byrd.

The Dish
Local chefs share their favorite recipes, ingredients they cannot live without, and the weirdest thing they’ve ever eaten. What is your favorite ingredient? It’s hard to choose only one. My top three are olive oil, fresh herbs, and mustard. Oh—but what about lime and apple cider vinegar? Better ask me for my top ten! What is your favorite kitchen tool? My knives. They make a lot of a difference in your cooking experience.

When Cosmic Coconut opened on Sanderlin in 2011, the mindful-eating masses flocked to the oasis of cleansing juices and vegan offerings. Scott Tashie took over the space, along with a few other business partners, in 2012 with the idea of expanding always hovering in the back of his mind. Then, right about the time he opened I Love Juice Bar on Cooper in Midtown, the bay next door to Cosmic Coconut became available. "I thought now's the time, if I'm going to do it," Tashie says.

Why Google Doesn't Want Franchisors to Have 800 Numbers
When it comes to considering the use of call tracking numbers and their impact on local search and business listings information, local search optimization practitioners should take a page from the Hippocratic Oath, and "first, do no harm."
