Photography Without Borders nears $30,000 goal for student Puerto Rico trip

Photography Without Borders is preparing to send six students to Puerto Rico on a youth summer storytelling trip called “Seguimos Aquí — Puerto Rico, Our Home.” The trip, developed in partnership with Taller Puertorriqueño, will give students the chance to document the island, photograph artists, and connect with their culture. The project will culminate in an exhibition and film screening in Philadelphia during the U.S. 250th anniversary year.

Its shelves and bins are packed with used picture frames, mat boards, photo equipment, paint, paint brushes, pens, markers and crayons waiting for a second life. A creative reuse center on North American Street near Berks Street, the store sells donated art and building materials at a discount.

In a bright room at Hopeworks Kensington, young adults sit at computers learning to code, build websites and prepare for careers many once thought were out of reach. Some come in unsure of what to expect. Tamaya Temple studied criminal justice in college and worked in sales before joining Hopeworks. A friend told her the program offered training in coding and digital skills. “I heard it was coding and editing,” Temple said.
