Quantitative surveys on public opinion towards science typically show high levels of trust in the scientific endeavour [Cologna et al., 2025; Post & Bienzeisler, 2024]. But these findings might be biased because our field, science communication research, relies heavily on samples drawn from access panels,1 groups of participants typically pre-recruited by companies. Participants usually self-select into such panels.
