Is SORL1 a common genetic target across neurodegenerative diseases? A multi-ancestry biobank study Open Access
SORL1, the gene encoding the SORLA protein, has arisen as a potential therapeutic target for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Studies suggest that restoring SORLA function or its trafficking pathways, particularly the SORLA–retromer recycling system, may offer a promising strategy to slow or halt AD progression. While both rare and common SORL1 variants have been associated with increased AD risk, recent evidence suggests a potential involvement of SORL1 in other neurodegenerative conditions.
Unraveling the physiological impact of ANGPTL8 loss-of-function variants in humans
|
Abstract Angiopoietin-like 8 (ANGPTL8) is a calorically responsive regulator of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). It does this by forming complexes with ANGPTL3 or ANGPTL4 that either inhibit LPL in oxidative tissues or preserve LPL activity in adipose tissue, respectively. Human heterozygous (reference allele/alternate allele, R/A) carriers of rs145464906/p.Q121X and rs760351239/p.Q131X ANGPTL8 protein truncating variants (PTVs) have favorable lipid profiles and decreased cardiovascular risk.

Rice roots recruit Bacillus via the secretion of heptadecanoic acid
Abstract Plants actively recruit beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms to enhance immunity, though the molecular mechanisms are largely unclear. Here we identified a complete OsMAPK–OsWRKY pathway of rice rhizosphere Bacillus recruitment via root secretion of heptadecanoic acid upon rice blast occurrence. In field trials, enrichment of Bacillus in their rhizospheres was associated with higher disease resistance of rice.
Exosomal hsa-miR-299-3p from endothelium mediates high phosphorus-induced vascular calcification in mice model of CKD via phosphorylated JAK2/STAT5 pathway
Abstract Introduction: Vascular calcification (VC) is a prevalent and life-threatening complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet the mechanisms by which hyperphosphatemia drives VC remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the role of endothelial cells (ECs)-derived exosomal microRNAs in mediating osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) under high phosphate (HP) conditions.
Epidemiological patterns and trends of respiratory syncytial virus in Guangdong Province, China, 2019–2023
Abstract Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute respiratory tract infections worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) substantially altered the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses. However, post-pandemic changes in RSV epidemiology and their associations with meteorological factors remain insufficiently characterized in subtropical regions of China.
Inflammaging and neurovascular unit dysfunction in cognitive ageing: mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic opportunities
Abstract Age-related cognitive decline is increasingly recognised as arising from interacting immune and neurovascular vulnerabilities rather than from isolated insults. In this Review, we synthesise current human and mechanistic evidence within a convergence framework in which inflammaging and neurovascular unit (NVU) dysfunction are conceptualised as a feedback-coupled system.

Personality traits and coping styles: the role of predicting sleep quality in transgender women
Abstract Objectives Transgender women (TW) generally experience poor sleep quality. Multiple studies have demonstrated that personality traits and coping styles influence sleep quality. However, studies targeting TW specifically are limited. Based on the stress mediation model of personality and health, this study examined the relationship between sleep quality, personality traits, and coping styles in TW, as well as tested whether coping styles mediate this relationship.
Extending the temperature range of the Cmcm phase of SnSe for high thermoelectric performance
Editor’s summary Increasing the lead content of the high-temperature Cmcm phase of n-type tin selenide crystals enabled high thermoelectric performance at lower temperatures. Gao et al. developed a crystal growth process that increased chlorine and lead solubility in tin selenide and found that 23% lead alloying lowered the Cmcm phase transition temperature. Lead also enhanced lattice symmetry, which boosted carrier mobility.
