Gut Microbiome in Depression with and without REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a risk factor for neurodegeneration, yet its heterogeneity makes identifying at-risk subtype challenging. Notably, MDD frequently co-occurs with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a specific prodrome of α-synucleinopathy. It remains unclear whether comorbid MDD + RBD reflects a benign antidepressant effect, or higher neurodegenerative risk.
HPV16 genetic variation provides evidence of positive natural selection driven by HLA class I
|
Abstract Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) causes more cancer than any other virus. However, most HPV16 infections are controlled by the host’s immune system and it remains unclear how viral and host genetic variation contribute to infection outcomes. Here, we analyze 4704 HPV16 whole genomes to identify 56 viral codons putatively under positive natural selection to change their amino acids, with evidence including dN/dS > 1, evolutionary convergence, and structural importance in the protein.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress in disease pathogenesis: its implications for therapy
|
Abstract Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a key cellular mechanism that is important in the development of many diseases, including cancer. Since the discovery of the unfolded protein response (UPR), research has greatly improved our understanding of how ER stress affects cellular functions, especially protein folding and adaptation to stress.

COL8A1 as a pro-inflammatory mediator bridges immune evasion and therapy resistance in glioma
Introduction Glioma represents the most common and lethal primary intracranial malignancy. Despite decades of research and the implementation of multimodal standard-of-care treatment, comprising maximal safe surgical resection, concomitant radiotherapy and temozolomide chemotherapy, and adjuvant temozolomide, the median survival of glioblastoma (GBM) patients remains a dismal 12 to 15 months (1).
Whole‐genome sequencing of 1,083 HPV45 cases and controls identifies genetic variants associated with glandular cervical lesions
1 INTRODUCTION Cervical cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and cause of death in women worldwide; over 600,000 new cervical cancer cases and 340,000 deaths were estimated in 2020, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.1 In the U.S., cervical cancer screening has led to a decline in cervical cancer incidence and mortality due to the detection and treatment of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its precursors.2, 3 However, cervical adenocarcinoma (ADC), the less...
Emerging role of exosomes in cancer therapy: progress and challenges - Molecular Cancer
Natural exosomes are extracellular vesicles produced by various cell types, naturally released into the extracellular environment. They are collected from biological fluids (e.g., blood, urine, saliva) or cell culture supernatants [35]. Natural exosomes have gained significant attention as efficient drug delivery vehicles.

Predictive evolutionary modelling for influenza virus by site-based dynamics of mutations - Nature Communications
Abstract Influenza virus continuously evolves to escape human adaptive immunity and generates seasonal epidemics. Therefore, influenza vaccine strains need to be updated annually for the upcoming flu season to ensure vaccine effectiveness. We develop a computational approach, beth-1, to forecast virus evolution and select representative virus for influenza vaccine. The method involves modelling site-wise mutation fitness.

Systematic review on oral microbial dysbiosis and its clinical associations with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Abstract Objectives The relationship between head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and the oral microbiome has been drawn in various studies. Microbial diversities, microbiome profiles, metagenomic analysis, and host–pathogen interactions were collected from these studies to highlight similarities and account for inconsistencies. We also evaluate the possible clinical applications of the microbiome regarding screening and diagnosis of HNSCC.

Rapid evaluation of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants by analysis of genetic distance - Nature Medicine
Abstract Timely evaluation of the protective effects of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern is urgently needed to inform pandemic control planning.
Comparison of self-collected mouth gargle with deep-throat saliva samples for the diagnosis of COVID-19
Highlights • The need for screening of asymptomatic persons remains in the post-COVID-19-vaccine era. • Diagnostic performance of mouth gargle is comparable to saliva in asymptomatic patients. • Mouth gargle does not clog liquid handlers that facilitate high throughput automation. Keywords Sars-cov-2 Diagnosis, screening Gargle Mouthwashes Saliva COVID-19 Dear Editor, 1 Zhu J. Guo J. Xu Y. Chen X. Viral dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva from infected patients.

Associations of Oral α-, β-, and γ-Human Papillomavirus Types With Risk of Incident Head and Neck Cancer
Importance Prospective studies are needed to examine the temporal relationship between oral human papillomavirus (HPV) detection and risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Moreover, the oral cavity contains a wide spectrum of α-, β-, and γ-HPV types, but their association with risk of HNSCC is unknown. Objective To prospectively examine associations between α-, β-, and γ-HPV detection in the oral cavity and incident HNSCC.
