Memorial Day - Never forget our fallen brothers
Each year as individual dates approach when I lost my brothers in Vietnam, I go to the Photos App on my computer and look back at old slides I made, including them many years ago. Those slides, now digitized, are as clear today as they were on the dates I made them. The Marines and scenes of Vietnam are just as I remember them. They were all young, strong, full of mischief, and full of life, facing each day’s challenge just as they had the day before.

Opinion | How to Address Concerns About ‘Militarization of Police’
Police officers equipped like soldiers have appeared on the streets of American cities amid the protests over George Floyd’s killing, renewing concerns about “militarization of police.” Some federal lawmakers have called to overhaul or terminate the 1033 program, named after a section of the U.S. Code, which allows the Defense Department to transfer surplus equipment to federal, state, local and tribal law-enforcement agencies. But legislators should consider options short of elimination.

DEA ‘El Chapo’ hunter Jack Riley wrote of ‘uselessness’ of Sinaloa cartel lieutenant ‘El Vicentillo’ as a witness
Vicente Zambada Niebla, whose testimony helped convict Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera, faces his own sentencing Thursday in Chicago, where prosecutors say his cooperation led to hundreds of arrests. When he was indicted in Chicago in 2009, Zambada, known as “El Vicentillo” or “El Mayito,” was portrayed as a logistics mastermind for El Chapo’s Sinaloa cartel.
Ex-Chicago DEA boss who helped nail El Chapo seethed at slow action on drug war
On Tuesday, a week after the conviction of Joaquin Guzman Loera, the Mexican drug kingpin known as “El Chapo,” in the biggest drug trial ever in the United States, Hachette Books will publish “Drug Warrior: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo and the Rise of America’s Opioid Crisis” by Jack Riley, who formerly headed the Chicago office of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. The following is excerpted with permission from Riley’s book.
Facebook refugees, from ad revenue to news habits
Three factors will reshape journalism in 2019: the pressing need for ad-supported publishers to find new revenue streams, the unusual effects of looking at reader engagement through the lens of subscriptions, and the question of where the news habit that Facebook created in a new generation of news readers will end up taking them next. The imperative to diversify revenue Do you want dine with the Times and shop with the Guardian? Wear the New Yorker and chat with the Telegraph?
Former Thai kickboxing professional finds contentment teaching others martial arts
Jacob Marks was 14 and living in the regional New South Wales town of Lake Cargelligo when he got his first bloodied nose. "It was the first bloody nose I ever had and I was like 'Stuff this, I've got to learn how to defend myself'," Marks said. The former Thai kickboxing professional, better known abroad than in Australia, now lives and trains others in Newcastle. Marks has opened up about his life in a short film by University of Newcastle documentary filmmakers called A Life of Fighting.
5 challenges the Apple Watch poses for publishers
Jack Riley is commercial and audience development director at The Huffington Post UK and a 2015 Harvard Nieman Visiting Fellow. The Apple Watch is now officially for sale, and strategy leads from digital media companies the world over are bracing themselves for the awkward question: “What’s our wearables strategy?” Here are the five things to know when the guy in the corner office wants to pick your mind on how to respond to the coming smartwatch revolution. There won’t be scale for some time.
The next stage in the battle for our attention: Our wrists
What are some reasons for concern? Data: There won’t be much of it The publishing industry’s most recent phase of growth has been defined by the use of data to optimize content and product. One potentially tricky issue for publishers developing for the first generation of wearables is the lack of data available — both in terms of news consumption specifically and product interactions generally.
Nieman Visiting Fellowship
The Nieman Journalism Institute at Harvard have just announced the 2015 visiting fellows, and I’m very pleased to say that I’m one of them. I’ll be spending February on campus at Harvard, researching, writing and presenting a report on the likely impact of smartwatches on the journalism business, as well as looking at the product development of wearable apps.
Opinion: Data key to tackling racial profiling in Ferguson
Jack Riley is vice president and director of the National Security Research Division at the nonprofit, nonpartisan RAND Corp. He was co-author of the 2009 RAND report "Police-Community Relations in Cincinnati." Authorities in Ferguson would be wise to consider following Cincinnati's example in dealing with mistrust between police and citizens after the police shooting of a young black man.
Media / Tech lunch - 1/1
"I felt wired in to history, a staticky digital connection I could see in the software that tracked visitors to my blog." Nice line from this Playboy (beware NSFW ads) piece on social media, from Ben Smith, on covering US Election day 2008 for Politico:

These images are documentations of full-scale installations that are built on-site in the landscape. Using illusion, imagination, and narrative, my photographs explore the potential of the ordinary. I approach my photographic work with a theatrical sensibility, much like a cinematographer or set designer would. By reading the landscape and altering the vista through lights and photographic effects, I transform everyday scenes into unique images.
