What use is Manston? A geography lesson for corporate ‘local’ media
Anyone who uses Facebook will have noticed a pattern recently: that their news feed has less of their friends’ posts and more adverts and clickbait from various ‘news’ sites.
Dreaming (and Being Disappointed) to the Glory of God
I am a dreamer. I don’t “live” in the future per se, but it’s a well from which I draw energetic water for the present. Often, however, I’ve wondered how to reconcile this tendency with the biblical imperative to “set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 1:13). In other words, although I’m a dreamer by natural tendency, I’m a Christian Hedonist by biblical conviction.
Things Take Time, Take Time
Music Reviews Courtney Barnett Things Take Time, Take Time (Milk Records) If you thought a year indoors had brought you back to square one, spare a thought for Courtney Barnett. As the world shut down, the Melbourne songwriter had gone through a break-up, prepared to move to the other side of the world, and watched swathes of her country catch fire. Once the plans to move to Los Angeles were put on ice, so too was a rough attempt at a third album.
Self Esteem: Prioritise Pleasure
Music Reviews Self Esteem Prioritise Pleasure (Fiction Records) There’s an inevitable stage in most artist’s careers where they run out of new things to say. A writer can only mine the past for inspiration for so long, and any success only widens the gap between musician and listener. And yet, now into the second decade of her career and with her seventh album, Rebecca Taylor has more to say than ever.
The Killers: Pressure Machine
Music Reviews The Killers Pressure Machine (Island Records) In the past, The Killers have needed to manufacture some exciting backstory for an album. But, as it turns out, they had plenty right on their doorstep. It’s a shame it took six albums, a global pandemic, and a canceled tour for them to discover it. But for those still hopeful of a successful second wind for the band, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Sharon Van Etten
Music Reviews Sharon Van Etten epic Ten (Ba Da Bing Records) The most incredible moment on Sharon Van Etten’s epic can easily pass a listener by. With audio panned to either side, wearing headphones, it’s possible to hear Van Etten completely alone on Love More. She begins with one long note while telling the story of a relationship’s darkest moment, pausing for enough time for a listener to tense—and yet she’s never sounded as clear or confident.

Do You Know How to Install a Child Car Seat?
As a parent, you will do anything to protect your child. I remember triple-checking the car seat for my baby's first ride home. Do you know how to correctly install a child's car seat? I remember reading the instruction manual when I installed my first child's car seat. This is a strange occurrence, because who needs an instructional manual, but I felt this was a good time to pay attention to it. I had that thing installed so well, any expert would be proud.

Future Islands: As Long As You Are
Music Reviews Future Islands As Long As You Are (4AD) Buy it from Insound The difficult follow-up for Future Islands came just eleven years—and five albums—into their career. Like a Future Islands song, they were powering through at their own pace. But somehow they missed; as with their singles, it was inevitably going to kick into life. After building an impressive and now overlooked back catalogue, the band's breakthrough, Singles, arrived.

JARV IS...: Beyond the Pale
Music Reviews JARV IS... Beyond the Pale (Rough Trade Records) Buy it from Insound It’s difficult to know whether Jarvis Cocker has spent the last decade trying to edge away from music or find a way back in. The death of Tim McCall, who worked on his two enjoyable, if slightly forgotten, solo albums, put those into retirement, while Pulp had already reformed for a festival run in 2011.

Nadine Shah: Kitchen Sink
Music Reviews Nadine Shah Kitchen Sink (Infectious Music) Buy it from Insound Rather appropriately, it appears Nadine Shah has also started working from home. Perfume Genius: Set My Heart on Fire Immediately
(Matador) Buy it from Insound Perfume Genius’ fifth album is a chance to take stock. Mike Hadreas’ life is now unrecognizable from when he’d upload to Myspace from his childhood home and the actual sound bears even less resemblance to what that music would become on Learning. Hadreas’ story can roughly be told through those early press shots—bruises on faces, hands on necks, and holes in walls—and today’s hyper-masculine shirtless cover and photos with an ax in hand.
