1 Introduction Farmers markets are often viewed as one of the primary methods beginning agricultural enterprises use to enter the market (Park et al. 2014). The existing literature has identified that regional and market-level characteristics are associated with vendor sales, resilience, and growth. The number (O'Hara et al. 2021a; Schmit and Gómez 2011) and variety of vendors at the market (Archambault et al. 2020) often positively correlate with customer counts and market sales.

VYFS to hold annual Wellness Day event
Community In an effort to introduce health and wellness resources to the community, Vashon Youth & Family Services will hold its second annual Wellness Day on Saturday at the Methodist church. The free event will offer blood pressure checks, acupuncture, haircuts, massages, arts and crafts activities for kids, garden and vegetable starts and free bicycle helmets for children. Representatives from several local service organizations will also be on hand to talk about their programs.

Fun, family, are the foundations of brothers’ coaching legacy
The sport of wrestling on Vashon has a long and outstanding legacy that spans several generations. But despite the hundreds, if not thousands, of islanders who have been involved with the sport here over the years, perhaps none are more synonymous with it than brothers Anders and Per Lars Blomgren. Wrestlers themselves since they were young boys, the two have been coaching together for 19 years — shaping the lives of multitudes of young people along the way.

Last Thursday, Vashon wrestlers beat perenially tough Klahowya 47-30 for a share of the 2018-19 League Dual Meet title. This was a big win for the young team. “We hope to keep this momentum rolling through the postseason and the future,” Coach Anders Blomgren said.

VHS wrestlers lose close match to league champs then come back strong
Wrestling After a close loss to defending league champs Port Townsend last Thursday, Vashon wrestlers bounced back on Saturday against a competitive field, placing fifth in a 12-team tournament that included returning 2A state champs White River. Top placers were Ethan McIntyre (2nd), and Jake Carman, Nico Nuxoll and Isaac Escovedo (3rd). Next up: League title match at Klahowya on Thursday, Jan. 24, and the league tournament at Klahowya on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Sport is a family affair for young slope star
At just 13 years old, McMurray middle schooler Davis Rice is a sponsored athlete, competes — and wins — against older kids, has his name on a trophy that’s nearly as tall as he is and sometimes hangs out with Olympic medalists. On the White Pass Ski and Snowboard Club and sponsored by Spider’s Ski & Sports, Davis has competed in slalom, giant slalom and super G events, and wins races, often by several seconds — which in ski racing is a significant amount of time.
Wrestling team places well at Rainier High tourney
Vashon wrestlers competed at the Rainier High School tournament last week, placing sixth overall out of 17 teams. Top placer for the team was Ethan McIntyre in second, with thirds coming from Payton Bonaventura and Nico Nuxoll. Finn McClure, Jake Carman, Lewis Kanagy and Jordon Rutschow rounded out the top finishes with fifths all around. Team members Isaac Escovedo, Jake Bowden, James Ryland and Yury Coucoules each came home with match wins.
Young wrestling team makes its mark at Everett tournament
Wrestling Last weekend, Vashon’s wrestlers traveled north to compete in the annual Everett Classic — a highly competitive tournament that saw 30 teams participating this year. Varsity athletes Lewis Kanagy, Jordon Rutschow and Ethan McIntyre placed second, third and fifth respectively, with teammates Jake Carman, Isaac Escovedo and Ryan Nelson winning one match each.

(Sarah Bunch Photo) Wrestling This past Sunday, Vashon High School played host to the 30th annual Rock (wrestling) Tournament, and according to longtime Vashon wrestling coach Anders Blomgren, this year’s event was the largest to date. In what Blomgren described as “a hot gym full of fans, families and wrestlers,” Vashon was represented by 18 entrants among the 220 participating from 16 teams across the region.

Islanders have ‘no words’ after caring for rescued pumas in Bolivia
There is no doubt the island’s recent turn as host to a cougar inspired a full spectrum of feelings within the community, from fear and anger to excitement and admiration — the wayward apex predator had its share of both supporters and detractors. But after recently spending a month in Bolivia helping to care for rescued pumas, two longtime islanders now have perspective and understanding of the big cats unlike any others.
Fundraising campaign set up for islanders
Friends of longtime islanders Rex and Elizabeth Morris, concerned about the couple as they face the loss of their home of more than 30 years and mounting health issues, have set up a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to help. “They’re such wonderful people. I’ve known them for many, many years,” said islander and friend of the Morrises, Christina Dubois. “They have helped me personally when I was going through a hard time, and they’ve helped many other people.
Wrestlers off to a strong start
Wrestling Wrestlers off to a strong start VHS wrestlers opened their season last week with a win over Lake Stevens JV on Friday and a solid fifth place at the Auburn Invitational tournament on Saturday. Coach Anders Blomgren described the Friday meet as having “tons of great action,” citing a 44-30 final score and wins by Lewis Kanagy, Payton Bonaventura, Moses Kilpatrick, Nico Nuxoll, Ryan Nelson, Jordon Rutschow, Finn McClure and James Ryland in the matchup with Lake Stevens.
Melinda Powers’ ‘Relish’ is open for classes, events and more
As the business landscape of downtown Vashon continues to evolve, one space that has seen its share of occupants come and go is now the permanent home to Relish, a long-dreamed-of labor of love from Melinda Powers. Relish is now open in the small space beside Powers’ island icon, The Hardware Store Restaurant, and will host a variety of classes and private events, as well as serve as THS’ catering hub.
Annual toy drive underway
The John L. Scott annual Holiday Toy Drive is underway, with collection boxes in place at various businesses around town. On Saturday, Dec. 22, organizers will host a “store” of donated items for families in need to shop for gifts for their children. The drive has helped provide gifts for 150 to 200 children in need each year for more than 30 years. “I grew up on Vashon, and this is just such an important thing for the community,” said event organizer and real estate agent Heidi Grimsley.

Two McMurray eighth graders have earned their place in the top 1 percent of students nationwide, competing in the Broadcom MASTERS’ student science competition for middle schoolers.
