FLORIDA (WJHG/WECP) - More than 100 new laws went into effect in Florida on July 1st. A full list is available on the Florida Senate’s Bill List page; here are a few of the new laws: HB 1159- Sexual Offensesstrengthens laws against child sexual abuse, increases penalties and mandatory minimum sentences for offenders and adds/adjusts penalties for related offenses.

Four districts hold A’s; Bay stays a B

PANHANDLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - District grades are out: four districts earned A’s again in 2026, while Bay remains a B. Bay, Jackson, Gulf and Washington held steady at a B. Liberty, Okaloosa, Walton and Calhoun maintained A’s. Franklin improved from a C to a B, while Holmes dropped from a B to a C. The updated grades offer a snapshot of where local schools stand heading into the new academic year — and where work remains.

Florida receives $415.9 million for the Disaster Declaration Request

PANHANDLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - On June 30, President Trump announced on Truth Social that " Florida has been approved to be given $415.9 Million Dollars in its Disaster Declaration Request." President Trump added that “Much of it is going to one of my favorite places in the entire World, the Panhandle!” Congressman Jimmy Patronis responded on social media with gratitude towards President Trump, saying, “Thank you @POTUS for your continued support of Northwest Florida.
