Women-owned Napa winery Eleven Eleven celebrates the art of living well.
The descendant of Greek immigrants, Anest was a little girl with big dreams. She recalls cutting images out of magazines and pasting them into a visionary scrapbook. “I created pictures of what life could look like outside of this small town—a world where there’s diversity and opportunity and art and interesting people.” One has to wonder if any of those photos included a vineyard.
First Taste: This new French bistro in the Inner Sunset is a hidden trove of culinary memories.
Thomas, the restaurant's director of operations, and Mounier, its chef, first connected over their shared love of San Francisco while working at Le Grande Maison de Bernard Magrez, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Bordeaux, France. Each had dreams of someday moving to the City by the Bay. This March, that dream became a reality when they opened a bistro on 9th Avenue, just a stone’s throw from Golden Gate Park. The decor is warm and playful with a retro flair.

The Bay Area Leaders Teaching Women to Step in to Their Financial Power
It's a crucial opportunity for women to influence financial markets and create lasting legacies. Research, however, indicates that only 28 percent of American women feel confident making investment decisions, a statistic that highlights the need for increased education and action. The Bay Area is emerging as a critical hub for financial empowerment. To find out how, we spoke with five women who are stepping into their financial power, sharing resources, and building wealth on their own terms.
A Lake Como chef and his popular pizzeria move to the Peninsula for love.
While the energy of Silicon Valley and abundance of California’s produce has Farouq still buzzing with ideas two months after opening, the real inspiration for his transition is Sarika Batra, a Bay Area native who is also Farouq’s wife. The couple met in Milan in October 2018. Batra was traveling with a friend and craving Indian food.

Holiday in Carmel: A cozy inn, quaint shops + seasonal fare make for a storybook Christmas
Carmel-by-the-Sea looks like a real life fairy tale year-round, with cottages bearing whimsical names, a village marked by charming courtyards and hidden passageways, and dense forest and the foamy Pacific beyond. Throw in some holiday cheer—twinkling arches, festive storefronts, seasonal menus, and drinks by the fire pit—and Carmel becomes even more cozy at Christmastime. Venture further afield to Monterey for family-friendly holiday fun.
Monterey R&R: Beach bike rides, kayaking, tide pooling + waterfront dining
As California begins to safely re-engage travel, indoor attractions are flickering back to life. In Monterey, the beloved world-class aquarium has begun polishing its tanks with plans to re-open soon; until then, the city is a peaceful escape with plenty of outdoor activities geared toward Covid-safe getaways. As of mid-March, Monterey has entered California's red tier of Covid restrictions, meaning the picturesque place on the bay is quietly coming back to life.
Long Weekend on the Central Coast: Foraging, Wine Tasting, Wildlife + Small-Town Inns
California is hunkering back down with new stay-at-home orders expected in higher risk counties across the state, so a coastal road trip may not be in the cards just at the moment. But all bad things must come to an end, and the time for safe traveling will soon return. Bookmark this Central Coast long weekend escape filled with adventure (seaweed foraging and zip lining), beauty (a butterfly grove), quirkiness (a loofah farm), deliciousness (beachside wine tasting), and cozy places to crash.

St. Vincent Collaborates with Craftsman Brewing, Hosts a Beer Dinner
Those familiar with St. Vincent's beer program know that resident Cicerone Sayre Piotrkowski has a fondness for Pasadena's Craftsman Brewing. In the restaurant's 15 months of operation, at least 25 percent of the draft list has been consistently dedicated to Craftsman brews. Piotrkowski's connection to the brewery has been a blessing for Bay Area beer geeks thirsty for Craftsman's full range of world-class, and often esoteric, beers.
Pepperidge Farm's Milano Cookies vs. Trader Joe's Crispy Cookies: a Comparison
click to enlarge Betty Wang In recent cookie news, Pepperidge Farm is suing Trader Joe's for trademark infringement, accusing the company of selling a way-too-similar version of the iconic Milano cookies. T.J.'s Crispy Cookies are apparently devaluing Milano's good name and reputation. Okay, let's be real here — are we grasping at straws much? I love Trader Joe's, and my pantry, fridge, freezer, car — and bed (don't judge) — on any given day are stuffed to the brim with their products.

How to stay sane when you WFH with your S.O.
The Bay Area's extended order to shelter in place provides opportunities to learn all about your partner's idiosyncrasies. It's been nearly four weeks since residents across the region began to hole up at home with their laptops, hand weights, Netflix, and partners. Living together took on a new meaning as we began sharing spaces with these new coworkers 24/7. "I just feel for people right now," said Erika Boissiere, a marriage and family therapist and founder of The Relationship Therapy Group.

As the final curtain draws, Speakeasy owner pegs SF's 'shut-in economy'
Late this spring, the Boxcar Theater announced the August 4th closing of its immersive theater experience, The Speakeasy. It's not the first time that artistic director Nick Olivero has fostered panic—and upped ticket sales—by announcing the end of the elaborate, Prohibition-inspired production. "I've got phone calls from the mayor's office asking if this is a joke or a marketing ploy," says Olivero, who has closed the show two othertimes in the past three years. This time, he says, it's for good.

Afternoon Coffee at Ma*Velous
Ma*Velous Yes, you sip it like tea. I first heard of the idea of a distinction between morning coffee and afternoon coffee a few years ago, when a barista at a Seattle coffee shop was describing the shop's array of beans on offer. The cafe's Central American and Indonesian beans, he told me, were straightforward and bold, perfect for just a regular cup of morning brew, while the fruitier, lighter Ethiopians and Kenyans were something to savor in the afternoon.

Once I got past the gorgeous photos by Eric Wolfinger, I had to ask myself: is this a book worth getting for the pasta lover who doesn’t own a pasta machine?
