Europe does not need a new story. It needs to make its story believable
Europe is entering an intensely political year. What comes out of it will depend, in part, on whether pro-European leaders learn to talk about Europe differently – and can offer proof that Europeans are still capable of acting together to their mutual benefit. Ursula von der Leyen’s 2026 State of the European Union address is unlikely to change anything. European leaders face nothing less than a battle over Europe's future.

Civil society drives European policy: It is time to defend it
When European leaders gather to debate EU’s future at this week’s European Council, the agenda will invariably be dominated by a familiar catalogue of issues: negotiations over the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), continued support for Ukraine, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, defense, migration, and competitiveness.
How Europe can win the 'culture war'
Hard power alone (tanks, drones, sanctions) cannot safeguard our way of life. (Photo: cristian) Opinion The publication of the new U.S. security strategy sent shockwaves through Brussels and European capitals. When your former best friend declares that Europe has “lost its way” and pledges to support oppositional forces to change its trajectory, this is not mere geopolitical posturing – it is the declaration of a cold culture war. It echoes the Western playbook for undermining the Soviet Union.
Europe’s fighter jet program FCAS is on the brink, threatening its defense independence Original
It was supposed to be a show of unity — France’s defence minister meeting with German and Spanish counterparts in Berlin this month to salvage a next-generation fighter jet program central to Europe’s security future. Instead the meeting isn’t happening. France’s government is in turmoil, having just appointed a new defence minister on Monday, and the €100-billion Future Combat Air System (FCAS) — once touted as the cornerstone of Europe’s military independence — is now on life support.
Op-ed: Europe’s security must be a ‘Doppelstrategie’ for defence and belonging
In the face of war on its borders and strategic uncertainty across the Atlantic, Europe is undergoing a historic rearmament. Hundreds of billions of euros are being committed to military and economic resilience. But there’s a risk: that Europe will succeed in arming itself — yet fail to defend what it stands for. Because even the most advanced military is useless if its citizens are unwilling to fight for the continent it protects.
Op-ed: Europe’s security must be a ‘Doppelstrategie’ for defence and belonging
As Europe rearms, it risks neglecting culture and identity. Without investing in what binds its people, the continent could end up fighting for nothing worth defending.

What the year of wars and elections has revealed about European sentiment Original
Every five years, the European Union re-enacts the same drama. In its first act, political parties and candidates seek the voters’ attention by presenting the European Parliament election as a decisive battle for the future of Europe. In the second act, all of them, for a while, look thoughtfully at the result — often quickly concluding it does not convey any clear message. Then, they return to business-as-usual activities, which is the drama’s third act.
Culture is Not a Bargaining Chip
Belgium (Brussels Morning) Europe, wake up. Culture and cultural heritage aren’t just fancy extras—they’re the very bedrock of a truly value-based European Union. They fuel our creativity, drive societal innovation, and are the glue holding together our democracy, peace, and security. These elements aren’t side dishes; they’re the main course. Yet, when it comes to the EU’s strategic agenda, culture is treated as an afterthought, a mere pawn in the power plays of Brussels.

What we need is a Cultural Deal for Europe
Europe stands at a critical juncture, facing war, division, and polarization which are eroding the very fabric of our societies. As decades of peace and European cooperation are threatened, the fundamental purpose of the European Union seems increasingly undermined amidst growing societal inequality and the misuse of culture and identity to divide rather than connect communities.

Culture is chefsache: Without its culture, Europe would not exist
Europe stands at a critical juncture, facing war, division, and polarization which are eroding the very fabric of our societies. As decades of peace and European cooperation are threatened, the European Union's fundamental purpose seems increasingly forgotten amidst growing societal inequality and the misuse of culture and identity to divide communities. It's a time when we must not only react to these challenges but actively reimagine and rebuild the future of Europe with culture at its core.

Andre Wilkens, Paweł Zerka: Jak traktować Rosjan i Białorusinów
European sentiments have been tested by the Ukraine war. Don't be fooled - they are still strong
- Copyright AP Photo/Euronews By André Wilkens, Director, ECF, and Paweł Zerka, Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR • Updated: 09/05/2023 - 12:10 The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not represent in any way the editorial position of Euronews. The war in Ukraine is putting Europe's commitment to openness, diversity, freedom, solidarity, and individual responsibility to the test, and it is not just Europe’s image that is at stake, André Wilkens and Paweł Zerka write.
Europe Day and the battle for Europe
The European Union represents a modern day miracle. We used to be enemies but are now allies, even friends. We have lived in peace for almost 80 years, something which is historically new for Europe. We live comparably well and support each other. We base ourselves on universal values and have created laws and institutions which protect those values. We have wonderful cultures, heritage and landscapes. We have world leading football teams and we have Eurovision.
The end of the pandemic will not be the end of COVID-19
Every year, the last week of April marks World Immunisation Week, a time to reflect on the importance of protecting people from vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccination has undoubtedly been a top public health priority since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. But as pandemic-era restrictions have been lifted and the overall burden of COVID-19 eases (with fewer hospitalisations and deaths), it begs the question: what does COVID-19 look like after the pandemic?
Ode auf den Stuhl — Summer of Solidarity
Das ist mein Corona Stuhl- this is my Corona Chair. It stands in front of my small temporary desk, which used to be an underused side table with a tiny work space of 120 x 40 centimetres. Of course, this is not a professional office chair. It doesn’t turn, it doesn’t swivel. It cannot move up and down. It would probably fail any ergonomic test. Zero points. Or maybe two points for attitude. Whatever, this is now my office chair, the chair on which I sit out a large part of the Corona quarantine.

Media, fake news and propaganda: It’s time for a European Broadcasting Service
As propaganda gets more attention on social media than real news and politics go more and more post-factual, the EU should get its own broadcasting channel to counter fake news and lies, draw Europe together and defend democracy. Petra from Munich reads it on her smartphone on the metro, Gunnar from Malmö listens to it on the car radio, Maria watches it from her sofa in the evening.
