Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote ad copy for the Alcona County Review. My first reporter jobs was freelance while at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Observation of events and information in the most objective way. Opinion and analysis are for other professions.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Otter AI, Laptop, Microsoft Word, Samsung S21 Ultra Smart 5G Smartphone, among other various bits and baubles.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The two best tools are your feet. If you are struggling to find a story go on an adventure. Go somewhere else and talk to people you meet.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

A reporter once pitched me the idea of doing a story about an Amish Uber Driver in Colon, Michigan. The story went viral.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I once got a call from a woman who wanted me to investigate the Battle Creek Police because they busted her husband for selling meth.
