Senator Dale Fowler's replacement expected to be named at June 17 meeting

The Republican Party’s 59th Legislative District Committee will meet next week to select a replacement who will serve the remainder of State Senator Dale Fowler’s term in the 104th General Assembly. Fowler resigned his seat last week at the end of the spring legislative session. Under state law, vacancies in the General Assembly must be filled within 30 days.

Demolition to begin on tornado-damaged Perryville High School building

Officials at Perryville High School received the news they were waiting for when FEMA last week announced the damaged high school building has qualified to be replaced under the Public Assistance Grant program. The building sustained severe structural damage during an EF-2 tornado in March 2025. Demolition will begin soon on the building that was damaged during the tornado. The district's construction manager estimates the demolition and debris removal will take 4 to 5 weeks to complete.

Effingham native competes for Team Navy in the 2026 Warrior Games

An Effingham native will be among more than 200 wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans competing at the 2026 Warrior Games this month in San Antonio. Retired Navy Aircrew Survival Equipmentman First Class James Shoemaker will represent Team Navy, competing in archery, sitting volleyball, swimming and track. The eight‑day event starting June 13 brings together athletes from across the military services and highlights the resilience and recovery of those injured in the line of duty.
