40-yard dash, best vertical jump, bench press, 3-cone drill
When the NFL Scouting Combine started back in 1982, it was a handy way to get all of the teams together and do what they were doing individually anyway. Team scouts showed up with clipboards and stopwatches as the draft class were run through a series of drills. How many times can you bench press 255 pounds? How fast can you run 40 yards? How high can you jump? Back then, this would have been the first time these young men had tried these skills.
What events are at the NFL Combine? Explaining the 40-yard dash, bench press, shuttle and more pre-draft drills
JUMP TO: 40-yard dash Three-cone drill Bench press 20-yard shuttle Vertical jump Broad jump Cognitive test While some players know they will be selected in the NFL Draft, many have to prove they belong in the league. Fortunately, there is a designated time for players to demonstrate their talent. The NFL Combine gives draft hopefuls a shot to showcase their talents in a series of drills.
NFL Combine: All-time records and top performances for each drill
Xavier Worthy set the NFL Combine record last year with a 4.21-second 40-yard dash. The bench press record hasn't been broken this century and has stood for 26 years. Here are the top times, reps and distances of each drill in the history of the NFL Combine. The NFL acknowledges performances beginning in 2006 for its records when equipment changed for the event. Anything prior to 2006 listed below has been researched and added. Drill at the 2025 NFL Combine will be conducted from Feb. 27 to March 2.
NFL Scouting Combine records for 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical and more
Football is a game of inches. While the NFL combine is not a game, it still comes down to minuscule measurements. College players across all positions head to Indianapolis each year as part of their audition for the NFL. The combine gives prospects a chance to meet with team staff members face to face, but those teams are also locked into the performance of those players in certain drills. The NFL combine record books are full of astonishing feats.

How The Science Of Rocks Is Like The Science Of Humans
What field of science could be more solid than geology? Rocks are visible, tangible. You can bang on them with a hammer, drill them, compress them, zap them with X-rays, ultraviolet light and radar, analyze their chemistry, extract their secrets. The study of human behavior, by contrast, is the story of science’s struggle to identify the ineffable.
Playing in NFL came at regrettable cost - Jones
Miami Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones, 30, indicates he will never play again after saying he can no longer run or jump.
Tua Tagovailoa's leap has Dolphins eyeing deep playoff run
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A lot of people were shocked when Tyreek Hill, only a few months into his Miami Dolphins tenure, called Tua Tagovailoa the “most accurate” quarterback in the NFL. Maybe he was on to something. At the midway point of the season, the highly critiqued Tagovailoa leads the league in several passing categories, despite missing two games, and has steered the Dolphins to a 6-3 record.
Dolphins need to address defensive issues amid 2-game skid Original
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — One of the things that made Miami’s defense so good late last season was its ability to generate pressure and get takeaways. Is that defense long gone? The Dolphins have one interception this season. That came in Week 1. And during their two-game skid, they’ve struggled to get key stops and avoid giving up big plays, let alone force turnovers.
VirginiaPreps - Dinwiddie Throttles North Stafford 55-7
The Dinwiddie Generals scored early and often Friday night as they mowed down North Stafford 55-7. It was the second time in three weeks that the Generals hung a 50 piece on their opponent. Dinwiddie and North Stafford both stumbled out the gate on their opening possessions and were forced to punt. However, both teams would get on the scoreboard on their second drives of the game.

VirginiaPreps - Lake Taylor slips by Glen Allen 40-34 in OT
For the second time in a matter of weeks, Lake Taylor made the haul from Norfolk to square off with a team from the 804. The Titans downed Mills Godwin 33-14 on 10/8 and they scored a 40-34 OT victory over Glen Allen Friday night. Lake Taylor and Glen Allen wasted no time getting on the board in this one. Tarreon Washington-Jacobs returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown (PAT Good) to give the Titans an early 7-0 lead. The Jaguars responded on their opening drive of the game.

Raiders begin post-Jon Gruden era with 34-24 win at Denver
DENVER — Jon Gruden's red-faced resignation didn't unravel the Las Vegas Raiders. It galvanized them. “It for sure brought us closer,” Derek Carr said after the Raiders' 34-24 thrashing of the bewildered Denver Broncos on Sunday. “We needed a win bad this week," Carr said.
Jags end 20-game skid with 53-yard FG to beat Dolphins 23-20
LONDON — (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have a championship pedigree at coach and quarterback. However it took a software engineer-turned-kicker to finally end the misery of a 20-game losing streak. Matthew Wright’s 53-yard field goal as time expired gave the Jags a 23-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. “I don’t think anybody on our team ever heard him speak until about 10 minutes ago,” Jags coach Urban Meyer said.

NFL Week 5 Injury Report | How Injuries Affect Week 5 Betting Picks
Injuries continue to mount around the league, and as a result, change several teams’ playoff aspirations even before the leaves begin to change colors. Lower extremity injuries — including ankle and knee sprains along with hamstring strains — continue to dominate the injury report. With the status of several top players in question, having a licensed physical therapist to interpret the NFL Week 5 injury reports will help you gain an advantage.
Coaches still waiting for QB to emerge as Arizona's training camp enters Week 2
Jedd Fisch likes to use a golf analogy regarding the Arizona Wildcats’ quarterback competition. He has made multiple references to "moving day" — a term often used to describe the volatility of the third round of PGA Tour events. As Arizona enters its second week of training camp, Fisch is still waiting for someone to make a move.
NFL math, Cowboys draft, Hall of Fame paths in Week in Review
As the offseason begins to ramp up for the Dallas Cowboys, both the financial and personnel landscape comes into focus. The NFL announced this week the salary cap floor is rising to $180 million, giving a bit of extra wiggle room to Dallas for upcoming contract decisions. NFL draft profiles for the Cowboys include three defensive backs in Florida State's Asante Samuel Jr, Syracuse's Ifeatu Melifonwu, and South Carolina's Jaycee Horn.
Byron Jones named most disappointing 2020 CB by Football Outsiders
Did Miami Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones have a season that lived up to the free agent contract he signed in 2020? No, but then again given that the Dolphins paid him out a record-setting contract to bring his services to South Florida, almost no level of play was going to be able to live up to those expectations. Jones was not even the best cornerback on his own team - a mantle that was also doomed to never be his unless he managed to pull in double digit interceptions in 2020.
Former Cowboys Byron Jones, Dan Bailey named worst starters from 2020
It's easy for fans to lose track of players once they leave their favorite organization. After faithfully watching a player for 16-18 weeks a year and for multiple years, a player goes to another squad via free agency or trade and a fan is left with the memory of who that guy was in the uniform they cheer for. Depending on which team they go to, that player might only get seen in one or two games a season, if that if they switch conferences.
Miami Dolphins taking steps to try to avoid more mistakes. And Dolphins' cap space drops
A six-pack of Miami Dolphins notes on a Thursday: ▪ The Dolphins didn't make a lot of mistakes in free agency last offseason but they're determined to figure out reasons for the miscalculations that were made. And that's why the Dolphins have told people that they're doing a self-analysis of the information used to select the players they pursued, which would assuredly include the regrettable decision to sign running back Jordan Howard.
Miami Dolphins sign CB Terrell Bonds to futures contract
Few things in life are considered certainties. Death and taxes are most commonly referred to as the two certainties in life, but we have now reached the point where it is appropriate to add another - the Miami Dolphins kicking the tires on defensive backs. Miami's 2019 campaign was a dizzying one in the secondary, as Brian Flores continues to scoop free agents off the street and see them placed into the starting lineup within weeks.
On Inauguration Day, Cowboys executive orders, promise made to fans ring hollow
It's a big day in the United States of America as a new President takes office. No matter which side one resides on politically, all of Cowboys Nation agrees the 61 st version of the franchise needs to bring change. It's been 25 long years since Dallas has seen itself in a Conference Championship game, which means 25 years of frustration.
Which Miami Dolphins are due eight-figure cap hits in 2021?
The Miami Dolphins are set to roll forward into another offseason of critical team building in 2021. With one of the youngest rosters in football and so many talents playing on rookie contracts, Miami has one of the most flexible cap situations in the league coming into this offseason. But that doesn't mean that Miami is without some significant investments. Which talents on the Dolphins roster are currently scheduled for a major salary cap commitment in excess of $10M next season?
Miami Dolphins announce 2020 team award winners
The week after the end of an NFL season is most commonly used for reflection. Reflection on what went right, what went wrong and what needs to change. For the Miami Dolphins, we're seeing a little bit of everything this week - a change at offensive coordinator, a commitment to a young quarterback and also some recognition for those who did their best to anchor the Dolphins on their way to a 10-6 season.
Bills top Dolphins, 56-26
There might not be enough ways to describe what the Buffalo Bills did to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. In the Bills' season finale, things went brutal for the Dolphins as Buffalo won 56-26. The game was not only painful to watch for Miami, it was season-ending as the Dolphins (10-6) later went on to miss out on the postseason due to their loss to the Bills (13-3). That comes in a year when two teams in the NFC (Bears, Football Team), made the postseason with a .500 or worse record. Double ouch.
Dolphins playoff hopes on life support after blowout loss to Bills
The Dolphins are going to be the biggest Jaguars fans on the planet this afternoon. Miami had a chance to make the playoffs by beating the Bills on Sunday, but they laid a major egg in Buffalo. Josh Allen threw three touchdowns, Tua Tagovailoa threw three interceptions, and the Bills beat the Dolphins in a 56-26 rout. The win sews up the No. 2 seed in the AFC for the Bills, but the bigger playoff implications are on the other side.
Dolphins CB Byron Jones with the toe-drag swag pick of Josh Allen
As the 12-3 Bills are playing for the two-seed in the AFC, they decided to put their starters on the field against the Dolphins. The problem with that is that the Dolphins have enjoyed quite the defensive turnaround this season. Per Joe Schad of the in line to become the first team in at least the last 20 years to finish first in scoring defense (they were dead last in 2019), first in takeaways with 27, and first in third-down defense. They're also fifth in red zone defense.
Dolphins intercept Josh Allen, take 3-0 lead
The Dolphins have taken the lead in Buffalo. Jason Sanders hit a 49-yard field goal with just over eight minutes left to play in the first quarter and the Dolphins are up 3-0 as they bid to make the playoffs with a win over the Bills. The field goal came after Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones picked off Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Byron Jones dishes on what makes Dolphins defense mesh
The Miami Dolphins are on the cusp of something completely unprecedented. With one game left to play, the Dolphins' defense is tops in the league in points allowed per game - leading the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Rams by a half a point per game or less. It's going to come right down to the wire for who the NFL's top scoring defense is in 2020 - but if it is Miami, it will mean the Dolphins have gone from worst to first in scoring defense in just one offseason.
The Miami Dolphins' most important player in Week 17 happens to be their highest paid
In case he forgot, circumstances reminded Byron Jones in front of a nationally televised audience Saturday that it's not particularly fair to be a cornerback in today's NFL. On paper, Jones - the Miami Dolphins' highest-paid player - had a bad game against the Raiders. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed three catches for 126 yards and a touchdown on four targets.
Would you believe the Nelson Agholor and Mack Hollins Show?
It was one of the wildest finishes you'll ever see in an NFL game. With two improbable former Eagles in the middle of it all. With 4:05 left in the Raiders-Dolphins game Saturday night in Las Vegas, the Raiders were up 16-13 in a decidedly ho-hum affair. Then the two teams combined to score five times in the 4:05, with Nelson Agholor and Mack Hollins - two Eagles wide receiver castoffs - taking turns making huge plays. Nelly vs. Mack. Just like everyone expected.
Fitzpatrick makes the throw of his life, lifts Dolphins past Raiders in miracle win
The Dolphins are alive. It's FitzMagical. The game was dead. And their season probably was, too. But never count out Ryan Fitzpatrick. Down two points and out of time, Fitzpatrick - in for a benched Tua Tagovailoa - threw a 34-yard pass to Mack Hollins which, along with a 15-yard facemask penalty, set the Dolphins up for a 44-yard field goal by Jason Sanders. That sentence didn't adequately explain how insane the play was. The facemask penalty was committed by Arden Key on Fitzpatrick.
