Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Food editor for a hyperlocal city website and magazine.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, please. Thank you!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I'm an Apple person for the most part, but also use Google Drive and Adobe Photoshop with frequency.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram, if I must.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was in charge of paste-up, but I also wrote a few editorials and hand-rendered advertisements for local businesses.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am actually most pleased with my work as an editor and the coordination of large and complex features.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

I think having a specialty or focus where you are (or work to become) a subject matter expert gives you an angle.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Via email, time is not a concern.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

As a food editor, the worst pitches that come in are for pre-packed foods.

What's your favorite drink?

Negroni!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading a book!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York magazine

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That food editors and writers are in it for the free meal. A very offensive presumption, at best.
