Associations of known and newly identified human milk oligosaccharides with infections in early childhood: the Ulm SPATZ health study
1 Introduction Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are conjugated glycans found in human milk, and they play a multifunctional role in infant health (1, 2). Their relative abundance and concentrations differ significantly among various populations of women and can also fluctuate within individual milk samples throughout the lactation period (3–5). These variations in HMOs are primarily influenced by genetic factors, particularly the maternal Secretor (FUT2) and Lewis (FUT3) genes (6, 7).

Exploring Siglecs: Potential Modulators of Immune Cells in Food Allergy and Therapeutic Applications
Many immune cells show overlap in Siglec expression. Most research is focussed on targeting Siglecs on B cells, mast cells and basophils. Targeting Siglecs on multiple immune cells may enhance efficacy and safety. 1 Introduction Currently, there is no cure for food allergy (FA) and there is a strong need for (new) treatment options. Sialic acid (SA)-binding immunoglobulin-type lectins (Siglecs) are mostly inhibitory receptors expressed on immune cells.
Characterizing gut microbial dysbiosis and exploring the effect of prebiotic fiber supplementation in patients with COPD - European Journal of Nutrition
Abstract Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is associated with poor dietary quality that may lead to gut microbiota imbalances. A healthy gut microbiome contributes to metabolic health and immune function through production of metabolites like short-chain fatty acids. Prebiotic fibers positively influence microbiota by promoting the production of beneficial metabolites.

Methodology for biomarker discovery with reproducibility in microbiome data using machine learning - BMC Bioinformatics
The proposed methodology consists of four phases: (1) dataset selection criteria, (2) raw data processing, (3) feature selection, and (4) testing. In contrast to other methodologies, such as pooling analysis [29, 51], we do not combine more than two datasets to produce a single one to be analyzed. The proposed methodology is oriented to work with Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) because they can be used in independent studies [43, 44].

High phenylalanine concentrations induce demyelination and microglial activation in mouse cerebellar organotypic slices
Introduction Phenylketonuria (PKU; OMIM # 261600) is an inherited autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that affects phenylalanine (Phe) metabolism. It is caused by a deficiency in the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH; EC 1.14.16.1) (Konecki et al., 1992; Williams et al., 2008). Wild-type PAH converts Phe into tyrosine, requiring the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), iron and oxygen (Blau et al., 2010). PAH gene mutations alter its activity and promote protein misfolding.

Dietary patterns in childhood and their effect on gut microbiota-an Asian perspective on atopy risk
The prevalence of atopic disorders has risen in various parts of the world, including Asia. This increase coincides with rapid urbanization and related lifestyle changes, such as antibiotic overuse, hyperhygienic living conditions, climate change, and air pollution. The transition from a traditional to Westernized diet is known to elicit compositional and functional shifts in gut microbiota, and is thought to underlie the pathogenesis of “Western-lifestyle” diseases in developing societies.

The Gut Microbiota in the First Decade of Life
Highlights The gut microbiota of healthy children displays functional and taxonomic differences with respect to those of adults, suggesting that the gut microbiome may develop more slowly than previously thought. Bifidobacterium spp. are more abundant in the gut microbiota of children than in that of adults, and may gradually decrease until adulthood. The microbiota may develop more slowly in some children than in others, who may present an intermediate microbiota state.
Extended indirect calorimetry with isotopic CO2 sensors for prolonged and continuous quantification of exogenous vs. total substrate oxidation in mice
Abstract Indirect calorimetry (InCa) estimates whole-body energy expenditure and total substrate oxidation based on O2 consumption and CO2 production, but does not allow for the quantification of oxidation of exogenous substrates with time. To achieve this, we incorporated 13CO2 and 12CO2 gas sensors into a commercial InCa system and aimed to demonstrate their performance and added value.
EuGMS survey on structures of geriatric rehabilitation across Europe
Introduction Due to population aging, the number of older patients with frailty across Europe is increasing [1]. Such patients are characterized by vulnerability to functional decline in the context of acute and/or chronic comorbidities [2]. The main aim of geriatric rehabilitation is to restore function [3] and several studies have shown it to improve outcomes, in terms of the number of patients sufficiently independent to return home following intervention [4, 5, 6, 7].

Fluid intake in urban China: results of the 2016 Liq.In7 national cross-sectional surveys
The main objectives of the present study were to estimate the 7-day mean TFI and the different fluid types among a relatively large sample across seven regions based on geographical location in urban China according to age group, gender, regions and cities with different socioeconomic status, to assess the percentage of participants who comply with the adequate intake of water from fluids set by Chinese Nutrition Society, and to evaluate the contributions of fluid types to TFI.
Fluid intake of children, adolescents and adults in Indonesia: results of the 2016 Liq.In7 national cross-sectional survey
This cross-sectional survey reports TFI and fluid type for children, adolescents and adults aged 4–65 years in Indonesia in an attempt to study the fluid intake pattern across nine regions of Indonesia. In the present survey, 67–80% of participants reported daily TFIs that met the Indonesian recommendations on adequate intake [7]. These rates are higher than previous data from Indonesia 55–70% [22, 23] where EFSA recommendations were used [6].
Challenges in the assessment of total fluid intake in children and adolescents: a discussion paper
Methods for specifically assessing total fluid intakes are in the early stages of development. A few methods have been objectively validated and are discussed at the end of the current section, although some focus on adults rather than children. Total water intake assessment presents some different issues to total dietary assessment, especially given that fluid may be consumed throughout the day rather than on a discrete occasion.
A comparison of drinking behavior using a harmonized methodology ( Liq.In7) in six countries
This study is the first time that drinking behavior, in terms of volume and fluid type, has been reported for these populations by including whether or not food was also consumed, either as a meal or outside of meals. We describe three distinct drinking behaviors: drinking with meals, drinking as a stand-alone activity and a type of ‘grazing’ (i.e., frequent drinking occasions throughout the day) behavior, which appear to be linked to social, cultural and dietary factors.
Fluid intake patterns of children and adolescents: results of six Liq.In7 national cross-sectional surveys
Cluster analysis enables the identification of behaviors and associated characteristics, which may help target the specific populations that require intervention to change behavior. Unlike other cluster analyses, that have looked at fluid intake types in the context of energy content [35, 38], or diet quality [36], the emphasis of this analysis was drinking behavior.
