Manitoba faba bean processor, Prairie Fava, drops grain marketing licence

Southwestern Manitoba faba bean business Prairie Fava is longer certified to market beans by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC). The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) on June 30 said Prairie Fava no longer holds a CGC grain dealer licence, effective July 1. They noted, however, that the company retains its process elevator licence. Prairie Fava representatives weren’t immediately available to say what the licence loss means for its current operations, if anything.

Health Canada officially clears crop drone sprayers for takeoff

Health Canada has granted final approval to new federal policies for drone spraying of crops just weeks after allowing interim approval. The new policy allows remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS, otherwise known as drones) to be used to apply pesticides that are already approved for conventional aerial application. It takes effect June 30.

Barley and oat breeder Brian Rossnagel, livestock geneticist David Bailey, Jersey dairy cattle breeder Gary Bowers, Quebec dairy farmer Guy Charbonneau and Ontario broccoli grower Ken Forth were announced June 18 as the latest hall of fame inductees, ahead of the formal ceremony to be held Nov. 7 at Laval, Que. WHY IT MATTERS: The national hall of fame for Canadian agriculture is meant to inspire a “culture of excellence and progress” in the industry at large.
