Modeling Logical Interdependencies: Quantifying Systemic Risk From Rule-Governed Actions
1 Introduction Cascading failures involving critical infrastructure, and the broader challenge of understanding and modeling systemic risk, are central concerns in risk analysis and resilience engineering (Chang et al. 2014; Cutter 2018; Pescaroli and Alexander 2016; Yu et al. 2020). Much of the existing work in this area has focused on technical linkages that are visible and readily formalized.

HELZ-BRCA2 complex resolves R-loops to drive transcription-coupled homologous recombination
|
Abstract R-loops are transcription-induced, three-stranded nucleic acid structures that, if not properly resolved, can disrupt DNA repair and compromise genome stability. BRCA2, a tumor suppressor vital for homologous recombination (HR), also contributes to R-loop regulation, though the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identify HELZ as a direct BRCA2 interactor and characterize it as an ssRNA-specific R-loop resolvase.

HELZ is a RNA-DNA helicase that resolves R loops to facilitate homologous recombination repair
|
Abstract R loop homeostasis is critical for DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair; however, how R loops are resolved in this context is poorly understood. Here, we define HELZ as a unique RNA-DNA helicase that resolves R loops to facilitate homologous recombination (HR) repair.

A generalist biomedical vision-language model via multi-CLIP knowledge distillation
Abstract Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining (CLIP) models, which are pretrained on natural images with billions of image-text pairs, exhibit strong zero-shot and cross-modal capabilities. However, their application in biomedicine remains challenging due to limited large-scale image-text data and heterogeneous imaging modalities. Here we show that a generalist biomedical foundation model can be effectively built via multimodal medical knowledge distillation.

Homo Juridicus, Homo Heuristicus, and Homo Anticipans: A Sociohydrological Study of Operator Behavior and Flood‐Drought Tradeoffs in Reservoirs
1 Introduction Water storage reservoirs and hydrological extremes (floods and droughts) are inextricably linked. In response to these extreme events, human societies have constructed and operated reservoirs to deliberately control hydrological variability (Montanari et al., 2013; Van Loon et al., 2016; Vörösmarty et al., 2013; Ye et al., 2003). This intervention alters the frequency, magnitude, and spatial distribution of too much or too little water, affecting both the environment and society.

Mouthwatering Chicken
For a food to be genuinely mouthwatering, it must light up all your senses. Sichuan’s kou shui ji boldly delivers. In fact, just the sight of the dish known as mouthwatering chicken whets the appetite: Feast your eyes on the neon chili oil sauce glistening atop slices of cool chicken. Inhale the potent aromas. You’ll get whiffs of nutty sesame oil mingling with the gentle acidity of black vinegar and the floral, citrusy pull of Sichuan peppercorns.
Chilaquiles Verdes
Sometimes, a little sogginess is a good thing. Think of the way piping hot and crispy french fries relax under brown gravy and cheese curds in poutine, or how a golden nest of egg noodles sinks and softens in coconutty khao soi broth, or how marinara seeps into a cutlet’s nooks and crannies in chicken Parmesan. In nearly every food tradition where there’s a love for frying, it seems that there’s also admiration for that saucier, more yielding version of something that was once crisp.

Ride Along with a snow plow operator, Cambridge super finalists, flavorful chicken, St. Pat's concert, more!
Welcome to the Journal & Press’s Sunday Paper Edition, where we max out our bandwidth — just like the Sunday papers of yore used to max out their printing press capacity. Let’s start in Cambridge, where the school district has narrowed its superintendent search to two candidates.
Gentle poaching makes chicken incredibly succulent and juicy
The best part about poached chicken (which is also called Si Yau Gai) is the texture the cooking method yields: silky, succulent, fork-tender meat. Although this quality can be achieved just by poaching in plain water with a few slices of ginger and scallions, it turns out that poaching in a deeply spiced and intense sweet-savory marinade results in that same texture — with the bonus of the plump, glistening skin suffused with soy sauce flavor.
