Canadians don’t want to be the 51st state - and Americans don’t really want us
(Version française disponible ici) Sign up for A Stronger Canada for The Trump Era for our latest policy recommendations on Canada’s next steps. Canadians owe Donald Trump a debt of thanks. His musings about Canada becoming the 51st state have reminded us why we are Canadians in the first place and why we want to remain Canadians. Still, it’s worth thinking about some of the legal steps to, and political implications of, a possible Canadian statehood. First, Canada is a constitutional monarchy.

Wright: Brian Mulroney 'got' the issue of climate change, long before others did
The former prime minister is rightly remembered for his work to curb acid rain. But he also understood, and worked diligently on, the wider environmental problems we grapple with today. • • Article content Brian Mulroney, whose state funeral is Sunday, is rightly remembered for his leadership on acid rain, yet he also took climate change seriously. Put simply, he got it when most world leaders didn’t, and some still don’t, or at least one doesn’t.

Canada has no single national story—and that's a good thing - The Hub
It was a weird December at The Hub. Reading it, I felt like I had fallen into a time hole and landed in 1998 when I was a PhD student at the University of Ottawa and everyone was talking about Who Killed Canadian History?, a slim volume by Jack Granatstein. To some, it was a much-needed counterpunch and a necessary corrective to the social history revolution. To others, it was a depressing diatribe by a scholar who hadn’t read the scholarship he so blithely dismissed.
Did the Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins PC candidate violate party rules on discrimination? [commentary]
By any definition, Faytene Grasseschi’s book is a mishmash. Marked: A Generation of Dread Champions Rising to Shift Nations is part Christian testimony, part religious prophecy, and part bad history and even worse economic theory,[1] which may explain her reluctance to answer questions about it. When asked if she stood by what she wrote, Grasseschi conveniently couldn’t remember what she had written.

Universities on Fire is brisk, inspiring and sobering — University Affairs
The University of New Brunswick’s Harriet Irving Library is an impressive building with a wonderful collection. But it may have a name problem. In a climate crisis, can the intellectual centre of a university be named after the matriarch of an oil and gas family? Looking ahead, it’s not hard to imagine faculty, staff, and students asking this question, and a million questions like it on campuses around the world.
Literary Review of Canada
According to a Chinese proverb, the best time to plant an oak tree is twenty years ago. In the case of climate change, it was 127 years ago that a Swedish chemist determined that an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would lead to an increase in the global mean temperature.
The Four Pallbearers
Prime ministers are not exactly in fashion. In 2016, for example, Wilfrid Laurier University reversed its decision to house twenty-two life-sized statues of them after critics called the Canada 150 project “culturally insensitive.” Two years later, Victoria mothballed its statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, citing his central role in the creation of residential schools. Regina, Charlottetown, and Kingston followed in rapid succession. Toronto’s remains standing in Queen’s Park, but it’s covered up.

Saying goodbye to a glacier: 'On Time and Water' » Yale Climate Connections

In praise of ‘Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction’ » Yale Climate Connections
Teaching climate politics means teaching climate change, at times a daunting subject for non-science students. Teaching climate change, therefore, means choosing the right book by the right person. Enter Mark Maslin, Professor of Earth System Science at University College London and the author of Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction, a slim volume with a big punch now in its fourth edition.
Dictionary update shows how changing climate changes language, and much more » Yale Climate Connections
Climate change really does change everything, including language. New words and new word compounds have been invented at the same time as new meanings, or senses, have been added to old words. To keep up, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has released an update on the language of climate change and environmental sustainability.
OPINION | Dictionary update shows how changing climate changes everything, including language | CBC News
No dictionary can capture the language of climate change. There simply aren’t enough words to convey the enormity of what we confront as a species, writes Donald Wright. The Oxford English Dictionary has just released an update on the language of climate change and environmental sustainability. Greater Storms and Tempests
We are running out of phrases. “Global warming” worked for a while, but it didn’t fully capture what was happening, especially to global precipitation patterns. “Climate change” is certainly better, although it implies change that can be neatly plotted on a graph over time, which suggests both order and predictability when there is neither. “Climate breakdown” may be more accurate.
Justice Thomas Berger Also Worried About Climate Change
Justice Thomas Berger (1933-2021) was remarkable man who enjoyed a long and varied career, as a lawyer, judge, and public servant. The American South
The American South is a distinctive place with a dramatic history and has significance beyond its regional context in the 21st century. The American South: A Very Short Introduction explores the history of the South as a cultural crossroads, a meeting place between Western Europe and West Africa.

Calling for free, fair, and credible elections is not meddling
In Summary The US does not support a candidate, or a political party, in this election campaign By Donald J. Wright I first came to Tanzania over 30 years ago to volunteer as a doctor, and that experience instilled in me a deep and lasting affection and respect for Tanzania and the Tanzanian people. It was the greatest honor of my life to be given the opportunity to come back all these years later to serve as the US Ambassador to Tanzania.
The United States’ unwavering partnership with Tanzania
By Donald J. Wright I first visited Tanzania over 30 years ago to serve as a volunteer physician at a public hospital in Zanzibar. During that memorable summer, I treated children with malnutrition, malaria, parasites, and tuberculosis. I also developed a deep admiration for the Tanzanian people; they were warm, generous, and treated strangers like family.
The history of Canada Day
Because they raise difficult questions about who we are and who we want to be, national holidays are contested. Can a single day ever contain the diversity and the contradictions inherent in a nation? Is there even a “we” and an “us”? Canada Day is no exception. Celebrated on 1 July, it marks the anniversary of Confederation in 1867.
OPINION | Opinion: Pierre Trudeau was a remarkable man, but not Canada's national saviour | CBC News
This year is the 100th anniversary of the former prime minister's birth, and it's important to sort fact from fiction when it comes to his legacy, says Donald Wright. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau gives a speech on Oct. 30, 1972, after losing his majority. Canada's 15th prime minister was born Oct. 18, 1919, in Montreal, and passed away in the same city on Sept. 28, 2000. (Peter Bregg/Canadian Press) This year marks the 100th anniversary of Pierre Trudeau's birth, on Oct. 18, 1919.
Remembering a Measurement Hall of Famer, Lou Williams
I first met Lou Williams too many years ago to count. I was on the public relations faculty at the University of Georgia and he was in charge of Hill & Knowlton operations in Chicago. Each year Lou made one or two trips to UGA where he would speak to classes, the IABC student organization and PRSSA gatherings. His wonderful visits always were spectacular and after the speeches we would party, sometimes having so much fun we should have been arrested. Lou passed away at age 77 on Dec.
What Lies Ahead for Public Relations in 2018?
Throughout January, PRsay will feature posts by a variety of thought leaders on the year ahead for communicators and the PR profession. Fifteen years after To Err is Human: a success story to learn from
Preventable harm is a major cause of preventable death worldwide. In late 1999, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released To Err is Human,1 a report that riveted the world's attention to between 44 000 and 98 000 patient deaths annually in the USA from medical errors. Progress towards reducing these harms has proven difficult because healthcare lacks robust mechanisms to routinely measure the problem and estimates of the magnitude vary widely.
