We Tasted and Ranked 10 Oktoberfest Beers — the Best Wasn’t From Germany Original
While there are many seasonal styles of beer, few are as well-known as Oktoberfest. The annual gathering in Munich usually attracts 6 million to 7 million passionate beer drinkers, and its reach has gone global, with Oktoberfest-style beers brewed across the world, from Germany to New Zealand. Oktoberfest didn’t begin as a beer festival but rather as five days of festivities celebrating the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810.
The 1-Ingredient Upgrade America’s Best Restaurant Uses in Their Old Fashioned
Few cocktails are as endlessly riffed upon as the Old Fashioned, but its familiarity is a double-edged sword. A drink everyone knows is also a drink many will already have strong opinions about. This makes the staying power of John’s Old Fashioned, at John’s Food & Wine in Chicago, even more impressive. One of the founding cocktails when the restaurant opened in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in 2023, it embodies much of what makes John’s, our 2026 Restaurant of the Year, excel.

This Frosé Recipe Delivers the Perfect Slushy Texture Every Time
Sometimes, a cocktail’s name works so well that the ingredients in it almost seem like an afterthought. “Frosé” lands squarely in the latter camp — a clever pun that took off so quickly that bartenders, cocktail publications, and wine brands have spent the past decade or more riffing on frozen rosé. There’s no single, canonical Frosé recipe, but following a few guiding principles set you up for success.
We Tried 6 of America's Top-Selling Light Beers, Sight-Unseen — One Clear Winner Emerged
9 hours ago A "neglected" Victorian former railway station and railwaymen's club should be reclaimed before it is lost, a group has claimed. The Grade II-listed Strand Railway Station was Barrow-in-Furness's first railway station in 1863, evolving into a railwaymen's club in the early 1900s and serving as a …
We Tried 6 of America's Top-Selling Light Beers, Sight-Unseen — One Clear Winner Emerged Original
Over the past half-century, light beer has been on a journey. While producer Rheingold launched Gablinger’s Diet Beer in the late 1960s, the category as we know it was popularized in 1975, when Miller Brewing Company nationally released Miller Lite. Miller employed a marketing push that avoided “diet” terminology and instead emphasized sports and machismo, aimed to establish “light beer” as a legitimate style that happened to have fewer carbs and calories.
We Ranked 8 Classic IPAs (and 1 Pale Ale) You’ll Find at Any Store — One Clearly Stood Out Original
Credit: Food & Wine / Doan Nguyen Over the past 20 years, pale ales, and particularly India Pale Ales (IPAs), have gone from a semi-obscure craft beer darling to a beer style as ubiquitous as mass-market lagers. They’ve turned hops into personality traits, making bitterness a bragging point rather than something to avoid.
Be a Better Bar Patron
IF WORKING MORE THAN A DECADE behind a bar teaches you anything, it’s what counts as good manners. You should ask your bartender whatever you need to leave happy, but in my experience, many of the most frequently asked questions will have the same answer—no matter who is mixing your drink. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time patron, here are the things you should never really need to ask. 1. WHAT DO YOU DO WELL? Every bartender has heard this question.
The Best Bitter Liqueurs to Match Every Valentine’s Day Mood
|
Valentine’s Day is complicated. Maybe it’s the holiday’s shadowy ancient Roman roots — fertility rituals that were less rom-com, more The Purge. Or maybe it’s the modern expectation to prove your devotion via prix-fixe menus, last-minute roses, and a dessert you didn’t even want. Whatever the reason, February 14 has a way of stirring up feelings — romantic, resentful, or somewhere uncomfortably in between. In short, Valentine’s Day is a mixed bag for couples and singletons alike.

The Food & Wine 25: The Top Trends That Defined Food and Drink for 25 Years Original
We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go since Food & Wine started in 1978. Some are delicious and persistent, such as the staying power of sriracha. Others were … less so. Remember when Olestra was a thing? Now, as we wrap up 2025, we asked our editors — experts in restaurants, wine, bars, and home cooking — to name the most significant ideas, moments, and movements of the century so far that have reshaped culinary culture.
The 25 Most Important Cocktails of the 2000s, From the Penicillin to The Porn Star Martini
Milk & Honey, Sasha Petraske’s groundbreaking cocktail bar in New York City, opened on the eve of the millennium. The buildup to the craft cocktail revival had been brewing in the decades prior, thanks to bartenders like Dick Bradsell at Fred’s Club in London and Dale DeGroff at the Rainbow Room in New York City. But it was that pivotal New Year’s Eve in Petraske’s tiny Lower East Side speakeasy when the craft cocktail party officially kicked off.

A lot can happen in 25 years. Rewind to 2001: The world had just experienced the launch of the original iPod. Some of the top songs that may have filled one included NSYNC’s “I Promise You” and the Baha Men’s “Who Let the Dogs Out?” Smartphones and the portable internet-on-demand as we know it were still a long way off. Bar culture and nightlife also looked nothing like they do today.

The Best Nonalcoholic Drinks in 2025 Our Editors Actually Love Original
|
Credit: Food & Wine / Martini & Rossi, Leitz, Wilderton Aperitivo Co. In a world awash with lackluster spiritless proxies, uninspired mocktails and overly sweetened “alternatives,” finding a nonalcoholic (NA) drink that actually tastes good — really good — can feel like striking gold. Too often, alcohol-free wines fall flat, zero-proof spirits lack backbone, and you’re left sipping something that feels like a consolation prize. But the good news? That’s changing.

When we first launched Liquor.com back in 2009, the No. 1 song in the U.S. was “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas, Facebook had only recently overtaken MySpace in popularity, and the iPhone was barely two years old. Bartending kind of sucked, too. Okay, that’s a bit harsh.
A Taste Test of Cheap Lagers Nearly Divided the Office — but One Beer United Us Original
Credit: Food & Wine / Photo by Victor Protasio / Food Styling by Margaret Dickey / Prop Styling by Christina Daley For generations of Americans, lagers were synonymous with beer. Major brands like Coors, Budweiser, Busch, and Miller built empires based on easy-drinking, adjunct-packed lagers (those that include additional non-malt fermentable ingredients such as corn, rice, or wheat for clarity or taste).
This Is the Margarita Real Bartenders Actually Drink Original
Credit: Food & Wine / Tim Nusog Total Time: 1 mins Though there are countless riffs and variations on the Margarita — and more appear every day — few have reached “modern classic” status quite like the Tommy’s Margarita. Battle of the Beers
FOR GENERATIONS OF AMERICANS, lagers were synonymous with beer. Major brands like Coors, Budweiser, Busch, and Miller built empires based on easy-drinking, adjunct-packed lagers (those that include additional non-malt fermentable ingredients such as corn, rice, or wheat for clarity or taste). And though the modern era has brought us the resurgence of IPAs, doppelbocks, Belgian-style ales, and so on, most of the best-selling beers in the world are still macrobrewed lagers.

Bartender Basics: What Really Happens to Raw Eggs in Cocktails?
Despite being a common inclusion in drinks dating back to at least the Middle Ages, cocktails that involve raw eggs can evoke fascination or revulsion in modern drinkers. Salmonella scares in the 1980s and ’90s caused much of the globe to reevaluate their relationship with eggs—particularly raw eggs.

Is it a Martini, a Martinez, or a Gin Sour? None of the Above, It's the Emerson
The Emerson is a classic cocktail consisting of gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice. It’s a close relative of the Martinez, itself considered a possible forebearer of the Martini. The exact origins of the drink are largely unknown, though some say the drink was named in honor of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and one of its earliest known appearances was in Jacques Straub’s 1913 book Straub’s Manual of Mixed Drinks.

The Champs-Élysées is a classic cocktail that consists of cognac, Green Chartreuse, lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters. Named after the famous Paris avenue, it’s essentially a riff on the Sidecar that calls for Chartreuse rather than orange liqueur. The cocktail was first popularized in Europe, as the United States was still in the midst of Prohibition. The drink began to appear in cocktail books around 1925, when it was featured in Drinks—Long and Short by Nina Toye & A. H. Adair.
