The state flag's three stars represent West, Middle, and East Tennessee. But those regions nearly split apart in the 1840s. "We had two separate movements in Tennessee to create separate states," said Dr. Carole Busey, Metro Nashville historian. The tension started in 1843 when Nashville became the state capitol.
