A new redwood hiking trail on California’s North Coast will open to the public Saturday, with the creation of a unique tribe-owned recreation area. The trail is a key feature of ’O Rew Redwoods Gateway, a new attraction situated on Highway 101 in Orick (Humboldt County) just next to the most commonly used entrance to Redwood National and State Parks. About 1 million annual visitors travel to the parks to walk among some of the last remaining old-growth redwoods.

Sightseers who poured into Yosemite Valley this summer probably had no idea that a quiet controversy was unfolding overhead on the national park's most iconic feature, Half Dome. It started in early June when a Yosemite climber drilled about 15 new steel bolts into the rock face along a popular route called Snake Dike, which runs 2,000 feet up Half Dome's southwestern shoulder. To hardcore climbers, it was a shocking augmentation of a 50-year-old classic Yosemite climb.
