Caffeine on Duty: Countermeasure or Cultural Crutch?
Alliance Images / Shutterstock.com A survey of 3,225 EMS providers reveals how stimulant use, perceived necessity, and side effects shape on‑the‑job performance and fatigue risk. Emergency medical services (EMS) professionals operate in environments characterized by shift work, circadian disruption, cognitive overload, and sustained situational awareness demands.
Prelude to an AI supercycle
Hi all, As we wrote three months ago, we are in the midst of a compute crunch – demand is running ahead of supply and our position has stayed the same: The real risk isn’t that we’ve invested too much in AI. It’s that we haven’t invested nearly enough. Today’s quick look at the data shows that much of the supply remains latent, waiting on enterprise funding. When firms start spending serious money, the compute crunch will get crunchier.
đź Exponential View #572: When certainty is the real AI risk
Hi all, Over the past week, I have been in China with Hannah Petrovic, meeting AI and robotics teams including Zhipu and MiniMax (the two publicly listed foundation model companies), as well as Kimi, Alibaba, Xiaomi, Bytedance and others. Demand is booming. Zhipu, for example, is serving 5.5 trillion tokens per day. Developers are rushing to the platform, joining at about ten a minute. Keeping up with inference loads is a struggle in China, as it is in the US.

đŽ Exponential View #570: Jensenâs worldview and the threats to Nvidia examined
Hi, Welcome to the Sunday edition of Exponential View. Weâre trying something new in public today. First, youâll get my human read on Jensen Huangâs âtoken factoryâ worldview and what it means for Nvidiaâs moat and US-China tech strategy. Then youâll see the same week through a different lens â my AI Swarm View arguing through Iran scenarios. And finally, a selection of short morsels that surface the weak signals and secondâorder effects weâd otherwise miss in the noise.
🔮 The classified frontier
In May 2025, an OpenAI representative arrived at Los Alamos National Laboratory bearing locked metal briefcases. They were accompanied by armed security officers. Inside the cases were the model weights for ChatGPT o3 – at the time, OpenAI’s leading reasoning model. The weights were physically transported because the destination, the Venado supercomputer, operates on a classified, air-gapped network.
💸 Mythos and the mispricing of everything
A lot has been written about Claude Mythos Preview in the past few days, so I’ll spare you a recap. Anthropic’s blog post and Simon Willison’s overview are the places to start if you need to get up to speed. What I want to do in this essay is to focus on the part of this story that I think has been underweighted. The most significant and immediate implication of Mythos is on how we price risk. Critical infrastructure is the asset class that is most exposed and is systemically mispriced.

Reliability needs a rethink for a consumer-led energy world
Australia's energy rule maker recently kicked off its latest of the reliability standard to decide the settings for 2028-2032. They will come into force at the same time as the National Electricity Market (NEM) undergoes significant change on the back of the Tim Nelson-led NEM review and the end of the current Capacity Investment Scheme. Little has changed about the approach to reliability in more than half a century.
We need more research on storage trading
This is one of two spin-off articles from my previous series on the rising importance of storage in electricity markets (available here, if you would like context and need some convincing). Whether or not you are convinced storage will become the most important resource in every renewables-rich power grid, it is still important to understand how storage resources behave and how they alter wholesale market prices and outcomes (for good and ill) as we retire more thermal generation.

Feedback culture: Great learning design as a bridge to culture building
Feedback takes courage, commitment, and time. Teaching and reinforcing feedback skills in the flow of work can accelerate a culture of growth and performance. Feedback is the fuel of a thriving development and performance culture. We grow when we get specific, actionable insights about how to build our capabilities. Feedback takes courage, commitment, and time—but it matters, especially in a culture like McKinsey, where accelerated growth is the norm.
We won't always have to use animals for medical research. Here's what we can do instead Original
Animals have been used for medical research for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Greece where the first dissections were performed. These days, one of the main uses of animals is to ensure the safety of medical products before they’re trialled in humans. But in addition to the important ethical reasons for minimising animal use, the reality is sometimes animals just aren’t that good at predicting human responses.

Litigation funders watching for certainty on common fund orders in class actions
The power of the Federal Court to make a common fund order in the context of class actions remains in question but the Full Federal Court decision may provide clarity, which might reassure litigation funders keen to step into the jurisdiction. Diverging judicial opinions on whether the Federal Court has the power to make a common fund order (CFO) in a class action proceeding might seem a classic lawyer's problem, of little relevance to the wider world.

Limited change doesn’t mean no change I’ll be taking a work sabbatical the second half of June and with it a sabbatical from social media. As we are all well aware, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other platforms are not good for us. On a personal level they make us depressed, anxious, and flighty. On a social level they spread disinformation and destabilize societies. But. Social media is still a powerful tool for social change in some limited ways.

The big lesson from coronavirus? We need to listen to the experts
Gregori Saavedra One of the myths of the global coronavirus pandemic is that no one could have seen it coming, that Covid-19 was an unanticipated event that emerged without warning or precedent. While the pandemic was not foreseen by governments and global leaders, it was not unanticipated by science. Virologists, epidemiologists and public health officials have long been forecasting a global emergency such as the one that is currently ongoing.
