Family Brings Taste of Palisade to Colorado Springs
What makes Palisade peaches special? According to Audra McDowell, it’s the fact that they grow in a climate of hot days and cold nights. “It creates stress on the trees, and that’s what helps produce more flavor,” she says. McDowell has countless memories of growing up on the family farm in Palisade including the 10-hour summer harvesting days and year-round chores. Her father, Tom Saims, first tasted Palisade peaches traveling across the state in the 1970s.
Connected Into Community: Meet some of the Farmers of Colorado Farm and Art Market
If he were a plant, Will Frost would be a radicchio. Colorful, a little bitter and used in unique cuisine. “But I’m not,” says the farmer and Colorado Farm and Art Market president. “I am a spinach plant. I’m gonna give you iron and minerals and make you regular. That’s my job here.” CFAM began in 2004 with a group of community members devoted to Colorado-grown produce and supporting local growers and makers.
Jon Huang: Growth of Regional Whole Grains Provides Healthful Alternatives
The history of sourdough bread involves connections to ancient Egyptian times, biblical metaphors of breaking leaven bread and its popularity in 19th century U.S. gold rush mining society. With the rise of commercial yeast, food additives and industrial production methods, concern has increased in recent years about the links between chronic disease, environmental harm and ultra-processed foods.

Breakfast at Ragamuffin CaféRagamuffin Café
It’s Sunday at 6 a.m. I’m parked at Sanctuary Church (1930 W. Colorado Ave.). A motorcycle pulls up alongside me – an older man in a biker jacket. “I’m here for Ragamuffin Café. Do you know where it meets?” I ask. A few minutes later, the man walks me to the alley gate behind the kitchen. There is a padlock on the door – we sit down and wait in the early morning silence. “I’m Jon,” I say. “Cap,” he replies. Demetric “DJ” Davis soon arrives.

On April 11, 2022, Wilford Deweese, a 67-year-old unemployed accountant from Florida, drew a gun on a bartender at the Royal Tavern bar in Manitou Springs. Later, when confronted by Levi Hoover and Jeffrey Schuelke from the Manitou Springs Police Department and deputies Ronnie Hancock and Daniel LeBaron of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, he refused to surrender. In the ensuing exchange, Deweese fatally shot K9 Jinx and exchanged fire with police, resulting in his death.
Perspectives vary about night of 2022 shooting in downtown Manitou
It was spring of 2022. Wilford Deweese had stopped in Colorado while driving back to Cape Canaveral, Florida, from his brother’s funeral in California. The 67-year-old certified public accountant had recently lost his job and divorced for the second time; he hoped to rekindle an old love interest in western Colorado. DeWeese was rejected, so he pursued online dating that led him to Colorado Springs.

Democrats Gamble With Ads That Highlight Far-Right Candidates
With the ads, Democrats hope to push out moderate conservatives who may be fiercer competition in November. Critics say the strategy carries risks.
Russia’s Shrinking War Original
Another advance has made more progress, taking some villages and farmland north of the town of Lyman, which is now under direct attack. Russia’s playbook to capture towns and villages with limited manpower is brutal — destroy urban areas with heavy artillery and rocket fire, and then move in a few days later. This strategy suits the depleted Russian army, which does not have the troops required for sustained urban warfare.

Karen Chen of the U.S. has another bumpy performance.
Karen Chen, the 2017 U.S. national champion, had been waiting to unveil her new costume in the free skate at this Olympics, and it is stunning! The dress is lavender with a dazzling arrangement of Swarovski crystals on both the front and the back that catch the light so well that it looks as if tiny flashbulbs were popping. Her mother makes her competition dresses. “It represents our special bond,” Chen told me about a week before she left for the Games.
Mariah Bell's Free Skate Is a Fall-Free, Joy-Filled Performance
Mariah Bell had a wide smile before her skate, a sign that she was actually enjoying herself. And after her soulful routine to “Hallelujah,” she has even more reason to smile. The 25-year-old Bell, the oldest American Olympian in the singles competition since 1928, got through her routine without falling, and the joy rarely left her face. She looked thrilled with her performance, lifting her arms into the air and grinning ear to ear as she left the ice.
Alexandra Trusova falls but recovers quickly to move into second place.
Alexandra Trusova, a 17-year-old Russian skater who finished third at the world championship last year, fell seconds in her program, when she attempted the night’s final triple axel and under-rotated. She recovered superbly, though, as the routine progressed and the judges assigned her a 74.60, moving her into second, behind only Kamila Valieva.
Russians are dominating as Anna Shcherbakova moves into second place.
Anna Shcherbakova, the final Russian teenager to compete, did not try to follow Kamila Valieva or Alexandra Trusova with a triple axel attempt. But her more modest program — including powerful, hypnotizing spins, a triple flip, a step sequence and so forth — was a compelling showcase of her talents, which led her to a world title last year. She earned a score of 80.20, the best of the season for her, and moved into second place.
Karen Chen of the U.S. falls on a triple loop.
Karen Chen took a rough fall on her final triple jump, a triple loop, after starting out her program so well. Such a disappointment for her. She also fell on a triple loop in the team competition. At the end of her skate, she struggled to hold back tears. Afterward, she was still upset with herself. “That loop, it’s going to haunt me forever,” she told reporters.
Kamila Valieva lands in first place, despite a stumble.
Kamila Valieva struggled to hold back tears after that beautiful, sad performance. She stumbled on her triple axel but was able to finish with 82.16 points, soaring into first place. Her season best was a 90.45. One more performance at these Games before she can go home.
Alysa Liu of the U.S. skates to second place, with a smile on her face.
Nobody is having more fun here than Alysa Liu, the 16-year-old from the United States who just smiled through her whole short program in her Olympic debut. After all that has happened here with the doping scandal this week, fun seems like a novel — and important — concept. Liu, who became the youngest U.S. national champion when she was 13, had been hoping to land a triple axel here, but only landed a double.
Mariah Bell Falls in Her Short Program but Manages to Recover
Mariah Bell, the reigning U.S. national champion, had a shaky start to her short program, falling on the second jump of a triple-triple combination. But at 25 years old, she has enough experience in the sport to compose herself quickly. She floated nicely through the rest of her program. A raucous, though tiny, cheering section at one end of the arena screamed her name as she stepped off the ice. She scored 65.38 points and is in second place.

Nathan Chen Wins Figure Skating Gold, Claiming Prize That Eluded Him
Feb. 10, 2022, 12:24 a.m. ET Feb. 10, 2022, 12:24 a.m. ET Four years after he finished fifth overall, Nathan Chen fulfilled the outside expectation that he would win the Olympic gold medal.Credit...Chang W. Lee/The New York Times In his final practice before skating for the Olympic gold medal, Nathan Chen made sure to take in the moment. He stood alone at the edge of the rink in Beijing and looked around at the stands and the arena, and at the Olympic rings at every turn.
Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen’s rival, appears to fall short of a comeback.
Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan entered the Beijing Olympics as the two-time defending gold medalist and Nathan Chen’s chief rival. Now Hanyu’s incredible reign at the Olympics is over, after a costly mistake in his short program on Tuesday. His free skate score today, 188.06, moved him into first place at the moment but it almost certainly won’t be enough to win him a third gold. If he had won, it would have been the first time in nearly 100 years that a man won three men’s singles golds in a row.
For Donovan Carrillo, the first Mexican skater in the long program, it all started with a girl named Lisa.
Donovan Carrillo began figure skating at 8 years old, following his sister to the local rink, but it was another girl, Lisa, who kept him there. Carrillo had a crush on Lisa. Lisa stopped figure skating a couple of years later, but Carrillo, who had previously done gymnastics and diving, was hooked. It was the beginning of a journey that culminated with his becoming the first Mexican figure skater ever to qualify for the free skate at an Olympics.
For Brendan Kerry, Skating Runs in the Family
How long has 27-year-old Brendan Kerry been around in the sport of figure skating? Long enough to be an eight-time national champion in Australia, winning his first title a decade ago. (When Nathan Chen was 12.) Skating is a family sport: His mother, Monica MacDonald, and her partner Rodney Clarke were the first ice dancers to compete for Australia at the Olympics. This is Kerry’s third Olympics, and he scored 160.01 in the free skate to move into first place.

How Eileen Gu Won Gold in Big Air With Two Giant Jumps
BEIJING — Eileen Gu won the women’s freeski big air competition on Tuesday after landing her biggest and highest scoring trick in her final run: a left double 1620 with a safety grab. The move, which involves four and a half revolutions in the air, was one she had never tried before in competition.
Nathan Chen nails his short program and leaps into first place. Original
Nathan Chen of the United States absolutely rocks his program. He performed even better than his short program in the team event. He punches the air at the finish and puts his N95 mask on as soon as he walks off the ice. Your gold medal favorite, folks. He scores 113.97 points — an ocean ahead of second place. Wow.
Yuzuru Hanyu, Nathan Chen’s chief rival, starts his short program with a costly mistake.
The skating world just shook: Yuzuru Hanyu just popped the first jump of his short program. It was supposed to be a quad salchow, but he rotated just once instead of four times. Hanyu scored 95.15 points, short of first place. His missed quad cost him a lot of points, but he was so technically good otherwise that he remains in the fight for a medal. It will be difficult, but not impossible.
See the jumps executed by Lee Si-hyeong of South Korea.
See the jumps from his routine.
Donovan Carrillo is the first Mexican man to advance to the long program.
I must say, there has been a conspicuous lack of sequins among the men’s costumes at this Olympics. Lots of white shirts and black pants. One gray blazer with a black T-shirt that looked super cool and not “Miami Vice” cheesy. Ooh, but Mexico’s Donovan Carrillo is making up for it now. He’s wearing a black top with a couple of pounds of gold sequins that are catching all the lights in the arena.
Bitcoin uses as much electricity as Washington state. How is that possible?
Cryptocurrencies have emerged as one of the most captivating, yet head-scratching, investments in the world. They soar in value. They crash. They’ll change the world, their fans claim, by displacing traditional currencies like the dollar, rupee or ruble. Some of them are named after dog memes. And in the process of simply existing, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, one of the most popular, use astonishing amounts of electricity. We’ll explain how that works in a minute.
