Being a journalist is an unlikely journey for me. When I went to college at Cal poly, Pomona, California. I had a part-time job is the technician. My life goal at the time was being a chief engineer. Soon I discovered. There were many other things outside the design arena. I found out there were production, marketing, and many more. So I decided to get an education in marketing from San Diego State University. After working many years in engineering and marketing, I decided to try writing articles in my spare time. A few years back, before I became a freelance writer, I was working for a small marketing company which owned two different magazines. Everyone was a jack-of-all-trades. Being in marketing, I helped create different contents for our clients Microsoft and Intel. Additionally, I helped create custom magazines for different clients. One year, the editor-in-chief of the embedded magazine retired. I was asked to take over the magazine as the editor-in-chief. Later on, the editor-in-chief of the second magazine found another job. I was asked to take over the second magazine as well. This was the start of my writing journey.

Long time ago

There are many different types of journalists. They cover different topics in many different forms. Some like to write daily blogs. Others like to write long articles in many thousand words. Subjects also very. They can be anything under the sun: music, entertainments, food, travel, science, products, technologies, philosophies, geography, politics, know-hows, local and world news, and anything you can think of.In general, a journalist needs to be faithful to the calling. In the case of news, the person needs to report objectively and timely. In terms of technology, the contents need to be educational, relevant, and hopefully interesting. Additionally, a journalist can choose the path of depth versus breadth. I remember talking to a writer many years ago. When I asked the person about his work. He answered, “a mile-long, and inch-deep.”

Because I do a lot of research and reporting, I try to automate the process as much as possible. I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking for auto typing. When I interview different companies, I use Otter.ai to record the interview for later quotation and editing. In terms of research, I still rely on Google and Microsoft Edge. Sometimes I use Chat GPT to help me with particular questions. Currently, I am in the process of writing multiple e-books, I hope to be able to use some kind of AI assistance to help do the layout. So far, AI is still very primitive and not easy to use to use.

A poorly written press release.

I like Milo and Ovaltine. There are different packaging of Ovaltine. The one packaged in the US is different from the one packaged in UK. I like the latter better. For dinner meals, I like a little bit of red wine from time to time. I am still not used to white wine and what would go with it. Seafood, perhaps? I drink the coffee once in a blue moon.

Two things I do. Believe it or not, I still use pen and paper to write down ideas. For some reasons, that process helps me think better. When I’m staring at the screen, I am not as relaxed as using pen and paper. And therefore, I’m less creative when I am looking at the screen.Another thing I do is hiking. Even though I have lived in San Diego for many years, I did not know how many trails out there until the Covid 19 lock down. Perhaps this is the silver lining. Now I have found there are many different types of trails all over the place. Besides my daily walk in the neighborhood, my wife and I explore new trails. The ones we enjoy most are those we can walk and see the ocean. The high tides and low tides would create different scenery and the ever-changing.
