What Does Tom Holland Really Think About Jesus? By Unbelievable host, Dr. John Nelson
Tom Holland has spent years showing how Christianity shaped the West — but last week at All Souls Langham Place, he turned to the harder question: what can we really know about Jesus himself? Host Justin Brierley was joined by Dr Peter Williams, principal of Tyndale House, Cambridge. Yet perhaps like most people in the packed room, I was there not so much for Williams but rather his interlocutor: the popular agnostic historian, Tom Holland.
Why No Exorcisms in John?
I sometimes quip that my PhD thesis was a 100,000 word argument from silence. In that study, I asked why the Gospel writers – unlike so many ancient biographers – fail to describe their subject’s physical appearance. Was it something to do with their genre, their Christologies, or even their ‘philosophy’ of appearance?
Confused by retirees’ support for Trump
Posted Tuesday, April 15, 2025 2:54 pm By John Nelson | Scottsdale As we travelled around the Valley looking for a place to call home in our retirement, we visited Sun City. I found the number of Trump flags on display puzzling. Social Security and retirement investments are so important to retirees. Did they not know his agenda? Did they not look at their portfolio in 2020, when he last reigned? Since March we've lost $25,000 because of the president's tariff folly.

Cold cod sandwiches on the 4th of July Published 3:35 pm Tuesday, July 4, 2023 By John Nelson Columnist As far as July 4th holidays go, Independence Day in1973 was not bad. There were no parades or fireworks, but it was fun hanging out with some Labradorian fishermen up in Canada’s northeast province where summer days were bright and mild and the nights still cool.

Embracing autumn in our tiny kitchen
We’re so ready for the flavors of fall. Let’s bring on soup season, get ready to chill with a big steamy bowl of beans and fire up the grill to celebrate the Northwest salmon runs. Turning the megaphone over to “chef” Leslie for this culinary edition of Going Mobile. If this missive doesn’t make you hungry, well… check your pulse. Good morning! Our daily routine goes something like this: I roll out of bed early, sometimes before sunrise.

On a beautiful sunny day at Kenilworth Field in Northwest Washington, D.C., the Hoyas hoped to build off of last season’s successful run to the Division II National Collegiate Rugby Championships in May. After a successful preseason, the hard work seemed to pay off as the team looked like a well-oiled machine during the Sept. 17 game.

Huskies try, but they can't beat Cougs in tailgating
Mon., Nov. 25, 2019 The battle for state football dominance is at stake in the Apple Cup this week. But one thing is already certain: When it comes to tailgating, the Cougars are clear champions of the Pac-12. We’ve checked out the party scene at Montlake in Seattle and also at the “College of Spectation and Inebriation” in RV lot 1 just outside of Martin Stadium on the Palouse, and there’s no comparison: WSU is the clear winner in tailgating. Why?

Mentioned within that video was this article, which appeared in the January 2015 issue of SPEED SPORT Magazine. We’re publishing it online for the first time. By John Nelson & Tom Schmeh Dozens of online and print sources recount the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
How Would We Treat a Child Buddha?
“How would we treat a child Buddha?” is the question posed in my novel, The Miracle of Anna. Anna, born totally awakened, is not a child on whom her mother or others can influence or imprint their own mental and psychological biases. All too often parents and objective observers watch the spiritual spark, the bright eyes of our infants and young children, get extinguished by our mental orientation. Some parents even send their children to genius school at age 3 or give them iPhones at age 6.
Berlioz 150: John Nelson on the Requiem
What makes Hector Berlioz such a great composer? In one word, originality. There is no one like him in the history of music. He broke all existing traditions of orchestration, structure, harmonic language and storytelling. Even today, 150 years after his death, his music is fresh, surprising us at every turn with inexpressible beauty.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of a deep sleep for no reason? This has happened to me for as long as I can remember, and usually I have no issue going back to sleep. But it always bugs me — did I hear something that woke me up? Did I sense that something was different somewhere in the house? Around this time last year, after seemingly the millionth time of this happening to me, I decided to investigate.

Friendly Mariners seating host offers best ways to enjoy yourself at Safeco Field
At the halfway point in the season, do you still have the Mariner mojo? You should. Our boys of summer are still in the playoff picture, improbable as that might seem after their slow start. Now that the Fourth of July is here, it’s the perfect time for a trip to Safeco Field as the M’s begin a seven-game homestand on Monday. I’d love to see you there. As a Mariners seating host, it always gives me a thrill to meet people from my former hometown of Spokane and pass on what I know about the stadium.

Timeout: Retiring at the top of my game
After more than 30 years covering professional and world-class international sports for both newspapers and television, I made a career move.I got into high school sports, which shouldn't have been surprising to anyone who knew me. I've always read the directions after I put the bike together.A better class of people, I told my old colleagues. That's what I was looking for, and that's what I found.

Timeout: Opening day somehow tainted by Cubs World Series win
It was an opening day unlike any other opening day we've had in the past century. The Cubs won the World Series last year for the first time in 108 years, and now, 2017 just doesn't feel right somehow. There are no Cubs fans crying in the background.Oh, for the days of Lee Elia and all those “country bleeper-bleepers” who used to come out to see the day games at Wrigley Field.Whenever I think of Cubs fans, I can never help but remember the infamous 1983 clubhouse tirade that Elia went on when...

Timeout: Kudos to LPGA for world's longest, slowest instant replay
Tell me if this makes any sense. Halfway through Game 7 of the World Series, a fan at home, watching a replay, spots a mistake by an umpire that cost the Mets a victory over Boston in Game 6.OK, it's a hypothetical, and my baseball clock stopped in 1986. Deal with it.So anyway, this fan phones MLB and points out the error, at which time the umps stop Game 7 in about the fifth inning or so, and they inform the Mets that they really didn't win Game 6, after all.

The unsung heroes of doubles tennis continue to make a difference for the Warriors boys. After a tough 5-4 loss to a very good Ridgeview team last Tuesday, March 28, the Warriors rallied two days later to beat West 6-3 by sweeping the final three doubles matches in their South Yosemite League tournament.“Doubles has been an important part of our league wins this year, and our guys came through big again against West,” coach Rick Lund said. The Warriors were 10-7-1 and 3-1 with their their...

Warriors top Ridgeview for first time in SYL play
