The Fastest Shoes at the 2026 Ironman World Championship
The On Cloudboom Strike 2 dominated, with the Hoka Rocket X3 proving especially popular among the top 10 women and Asics making a strong showing with the men. The 2026 Ironman World Championship proved, once again, that this event may just be the toughest endurance feat on Earth. A choppy swim and a windy bike gave way to a hot and especially humid run with blow-ups and meltdowns not even Hollywood would dare to script.

I’ve Run Marathons for Decades-Here's the One Simple Gear Secret That Still Works Every Time
I ran my first marathon in 1980, at the age of 16. I wore a cotton t-shirt, skimpy nylon shorts, knee-high cotton socks, and a pair of Brooks Hugger GT training shoes with sheet EVA midsoles, a Gore-Tex upper with suede overlays, and a thick rubber sole. While my kit was a far cry from the light, high-tech gear I wear today, it got me to the finish in comfort because each piece was an old friend, tested and proven over hundreds of training miles.

At a recent trade show, I had the opportunity to sit down with product managers from close to 30 running shoe brands to get inside information on what is coming in 2026. Amid lots of exciting models, a few stood out as harbingers of a subtle shift in shoe design toward setting feet free and respecting the individuality of each stride.

Is 10,000 steps still the best daily fitness target? We explain why less is more and that speed really matters Walking is one of the best and most accessible ways to be active, with experts previously advising us to take 10,000 steps a day – but is this still the magic number to target? Spotted: The Most Eye-Catching Running Gear Coming Out in 2026
Every year in December, running nerds head to Texas like turtles to the Galapagos for The Running Event. It’s an incredible treat—brands big and small showcasing upcoming shoes, gear, nutrition, new tech, and the overall state of the sport. The vibe this year? Running is in a golden era for both gear and community. The sport is still growing, and there is gear for every runner. Brands are pushing each other to create the next big, fast thing.
Don't Laugh—I Still Love Vibram FiveFingers. Here's Why.
When I first saw the Vibram FiveFinger running shoe at the 2007 Boston Marathon expo, the frog-like toe shoes that most runners then thought were a joke made immediate sense to me. I’d long been a fan of lighter, flexible shoes and was fascinated by the barefoot-running roots of the world’s best distance runners from East Africa. At the time, emerging research showed that cushioned, controlling shoes got in the way more often than they protected and corrected.
Same Me. Only Better.
Can I be a different person? That’s the promise of the New Year—wipe the slate clean, get rid of all the baggage and bad habits, and start fresh. Hence, the New Year’s resolution. And the broken New Year’s resolution. “You can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another,” wrote Ernest Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises. You can’t by moving from one year to another, either. And thinking that you can is what leads to failure.
5 Lightest Running Shoes for Triathlon Training and Racing
If you look at the shoes from this year’s fastest athletes at the men’s Ironman World Championship in Nice, you’ll see many are incredibly lightweight and nimble. Studies have shown that, no surprise, you can run faster in lighter shoes – one often-cited study out of Colorado found that you run one percent slower for every additional 3.5 ounces of shoe weight.

After Outside's expert shoe editors field-tested dozens of stability shoes over the last 12 months, Run teased out six notable pairs you should consider. 5 Reasons to run outside all winter—and get stronger, tougher, faster, healthier and happier 9 keys for new runners to make your running more enjoyable, more effective, and more sustainable.
One morning on vacation last summer, I ran a loop that circled the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Later, checking the Strava app on my phone, I discovered I had run the second-fastest time that day on a half-mile segment along the north edge of the Mall—out of dozens who had crossed the same route. The information pleased and intrigued me. Two days later I ran a similar route with my son. Without planning it, I started picking up the pace when I approached the segment—until my son checked me.
The 2015 Runners of the Year
Our Runners of the Year rankings take into account results from all distance events on the track and roads, from 3,000 meters to the marathon. Winning or placing highly in the year’s most competitive races receives the greatest weight in the rankings. We then factor in how the runners fared in head-to-head matchups with other top-ranked runners.

Super Trainer vs. Super Shoe-What's the Difference
You know the shoes Ruth Chepngetich and Eilud Kipchoge wear, partially responsible for some of the fastest marathon times ever recorded? Those are called super shoes. They’re thick-soled, with ultralight, hyper-responsive foam midsoles embedded with carbon-fiber plates. Think of super trainers as the more easygoing but still light and responsive cousins of super shoes. We sliced one open at our gear lab in Colorado to find out what makes them go zoom.
Why You Should Use Winter Running as a Training Tool
In the winter of 1939, when the military posted Swedish miler Gundar Hagg to the far north of that Nordic country, he devised a unique training program of running on trails through knee- or hip-deep snow. Most days, he would do 2500 meters in snow for strength, followed by 2500 meters on a cleared road for turn-over. But during those times when he couldn’t find cleared roads—sometimes for weeks—he’d run up to the full 5 kilometers in snow.

The Olympic Marathon Is Boring. I Have a Plan to Fix It.
The marathon is an arduous, complex physical and mental test—one that has never ceased to fascinate me even after I’ve run 26 of them. But I admit that actually watching a marathon isn’t that fun, even at the Olympics. We see a group of runners go stride-for-stride for a little over two hours as the lead pack dwindles under the painful pace. Runners who fall off the front seem to disappear entirely. It matters little, except for personal pride, if they drop out, or hang on for 13th or 25th place.

Ask A Gear Guru: What Are the Most Innovative Stability Shoes for 2023?
Not long ago, you could easily identify a stability shoe by its firmer, darker-colored foam underneath the arch side of the foot. On the run, you could tell it was a stability shoe by its stiff, heavy, and controlling ride. Not anymore. Today’s stability shoes are well-cushioned, smooth riding, and free from clunky controlling devices—so much so that they are equally comfortable for neutral runners as for those needing extra support.

Is It Better to Give an Experience or a Physical Thing?
Give the Gift of Time By Jonathan Beverly, Outside senior running editor Anyone who's ever cleaned out a storage area needs no convincing that physical presents are overrated. I recently transferred a pickup truck's worth of junk from my barn, and far too much of it had come into my possession in the form of a gift-framed pictures, clothes, souvenirs, sports equipment-that I had used infrequently, if at all. Many were unloved from the start, items that didn't fit me or were simply weird.

Why Carbon-Plated Running Shoes Can Lead to Injury (Plus 10 Speedy Alternatives)
The advent of supershoes has transformed the running shoe world in every category, none more than the class of shoes that used to be called lightweight trainer-racers. Rather than low, flexible, relatively firm shoes, the majority of up-tempo shoes now have a thick stack of light, bouncy foam with a curved carbon or plastic plate embedded in the midsole. Shoes without a plate are now defined by its absence.
