SODDY DAISY, Tenn. — World War II veteran Russell Lee Roy Pickett was posthumously honored with a permanent marker recently at the Soddy-Daisy Veterans Park. On the Price of Freedom, family and friends remember a humble hero. "We're here to honor Private First Class Russell Lee Roy Pickett." Friends, family, and elected officials all gathered to honor Mr. Pickett. "On June 6th, 1944 the 19 year old landed at Normandy, France." He was part of the first wave at Omaha Beach.

He said his time in the Marine Corps was a challenge from the beginning. Parris Island was difficult for me. Usually it was three months long, but they shortened it to two because they needed people so bad. In Vietnam. The first time I heard the name David Barry was at a Freedom Sings USA event in 2025. Freedom Sings is a music therapy program for veterans.
