New $400 athletic fee in Polk County takes effect in July

BARTOW, Fla. — Starting next month, Polk County Public Schools will charge a fee for any private school student who participates in district sports. A new law allows school districts to charge a fee up to $400. Earlier this month, the school board voted unanimously to approve the $400 fee. Under the new state law, private school students have the opportunity to participate in district sports that are not offered by their school. Districts may charge the fee to cover the costs involved.

10-year-old Pasco County boy suffers life-threatening injuries after being struck by two vehicles

TAMPA, Fla. — A 10-year-old Pasco County boy who was struck by two vehicles remains hospitalized at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa. Jackie Almeida said she's praying for a miracle. She said her son, Asher Thompson, suffered critical injuries. He remains in an intensive care unit, and doctors performed more imaging on his brain on Wednesday. "I totally believe in miracles. Today has not been a good day to hear the stuff about the MRI," she said.

University of South Florida student suffers stroke at 20-years-old

BRANDON, Fla. — A University of South Florida student is recovering at a Brandon hospital after suffering from a stroke earlier this month. Gabriella Melo, 20, said she felt dizzy. She said the right side of her body went numb. Her aunt found her lying on the floor near her room. "I just remember feeling very dizzy then I fell on the floor and I threw up. I couldn't feel my arm or my leg so I was just like something is going on with me," she said.
