The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex at the crossroads of cancer metabolism and cell death
Introduction Cancer is increasingly understood as a disease of coordinated cellular rewiring, in which proliferative signaling, stress adaptation, and immune evasion are closely intertwined with metabolic remodeling.1 Nearly a century after Warburg first described the preference of tumor cells for lactate production despite oxygen availability, aerobic glycolysis is now recognized as an adaptive metabolic program that supports biomass synthesis, redox balance, and survival under stress,...
Surface d -orbital order in an intermetallic compound
|
Abstract Orbital order describes a quantum state where occupied orbitals line up in a periodic pattern. Although orbital physics plays a fundamental and universal role in strongly correlated electron systems, the existence and particularly the band-structure fingerprint of orbital order remain a long-standing mystery. Here we report the discovery of rare earth 5d-orbital order developed by the surface states of the intermetallic compound Tb2CoAl4Ge2.

Optical cooling by interfacial charge transfer in 2D heterostructures
Abstract Optical refrigeration, or laser cooling of solids1, offers a cryogen-free route to temperature control for quantum and electronic systems. Existing progress2,3,4,5,6,7,8 relies on a phonon-assisted up-conversion photoluminescence approach, which remains constrained by stringent material and excitation requirements. Here we demonstrate a distinct route, interfacial-charge-transfer-driven optical cooling, in two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures.
A wearable non-invasive sonogenetic pacemaker
|
Abstract Cardiac pacemakers are critical for treating heart rhythm disorders, but traditional implants are associated with great risks and complications owing to their invasive nature. Here we introduce a wearable non-invasive ultrasound pacemaker (NUP) that activates engineered sonogenetic ion channels (MscL-G22S) to modulate cardiomyocytes, achieving spatiotemporally controlled precise cardiac pacing.

Abstract Ruddlesden–Popper nickelates have emerged as a crucial platform for exploring the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, the Fermi surface topology required for superconductivity remains unknown.
Noncollinear ferrielectricity in a van der Waals crystal
|
Abstract Inspired by noncollinear magnetic dipole order, noncollinear electric dipole order is anticipated to open up rich ferroelectric physics and new opportunities for device applications. However, establishing such order in single crystals remains challenging, as electric polarization is typically locked to crystallographic axes. Here we report noncollinear ferrielectricity in the van der Waals crystal WO2Br2, arising from competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phonon modes.

Room-temperature high-efficiency spin injection via van der Waals tunnel contact - Nature Communications
Abstract Efficient and reliable spin injection at room temperature with scalability is crucial for spintronic applications but remains challenging. Direct ferromagnetic metal deposition on two-dimensional materials often leads to inefficient transparent contacts. Here, we introduce an indium buffer layer between ferromagnetic cobalt (Co) and graphene to establish high-efficiency van der Waals (vdW) tunnel contacts.

Electric field-tunable ferromagnetism in a van der Waals semiconductor up to room temperature - Nature Communications
Abstract Ferromagnetic semiconductors, coupling charge transport and magnetism via electrical means, show great promise for spin-based logic devices. Despite decades of efforts to achieve such co-functionality, maintaining ferromagnetic order at room temperature remains elusive. Here, we address this long-standing challenge by implanting dilute Co atoms into few-layer black phosphorus through atomically-thin boron nitride diffusion barrier.
Scalable transition metal dichalcogenide memtransistor arrays with Schottky-barrier control for energy-efficient artificial neural networks - Nature Communications
Abstract Memtransistors that integrate memristor and transistor functionalities are promising candidates for scalable, energy-efficient neuromorphic computing. However, achieving high performance in memtransistor arrays—particularly in terms of resistive switching ratio, uniformity, and scalability—remains a significant challenge for practical deployment in artificial neural networks.
Crystal-symmetry-paired spin–valley locking in a layered room-temperature metallic altermagnet candidate - Nature Physics
Abstract Previous theoretical efforts have predicted a type of unconventional antiferromagnet characterized by a crystal symmetry that connects antiferromagnetic sublattices in real space and simultaneously couples spin and momentum in reciprocal space. This results in a unique crystal-symmetry-paired spin–valley locking and related properties including piezomagnetism and non-collinear spin current even without spin–orbit coupling.
Observation and manipulation of two-dimensional topological polar texture confined in moiré interface - Nature Communications
Abstract Topological polar structures in ferroelectric thin films have become an emerging research field for exotic phenomena. Due to the prerequisite of the intricate balance among the intrinsic dipolar anisotropy, the imposed electric and mechanical boundary, the topological polar domains are predominantly formed within complex oxides.
Switchable planar chirality and spin texture in highly ordered ferroelectric hybrid perovskite domains - Nature Communications
Abstract Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites offer a promising platform for developing non-linear chiro-optical applications and chiral-induced spin selectivity. Here, we show that achiral hybrid perovskites that have highly ordered ferroelectric domains with orthogonal polarization exhibit planar chirality, as manifested by second harmonic generation with strong circular dichroism.

On-device phase engineering - Nature Materials
Abstract In situ tailoring of two-dimensional materials’ phases under external stimulus facilitates the manipulation of their properties for electronic, quantum and energy applications. However, current methods are mainly limited to the transitions among phases with unchanged chemical stoichiometry. Here we propose on-device phase engineering that allows us to realize various lattice phases with distinct chemical stoichiometries.
Emergence of quantum confinement in topological kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5 - Communications Materials
Abstract Quantum confinement is a restriction on the motion of electrons in a material to specific region, resulting in discrete energy levels rather than continuous energy bands. In certain materials, quantum confinement could dramatically reshape the electronic structure and properties of the surface with respect to the bulk. Here, in the recently discovered kagome superconductors CsV3Sb5, we unveil the dominant role of quantum confinement in determining their surface electronic structure.
Stack growth of wafer-scale van der Waals superconductor heterostructures - Nature

Creating two-dimensional solid helium via diamond lattice confinement - Nature Communications
Abstract The universe abounds with solid helium in polymorphic forms. Therefore, exploring the allotropes of helium remains vital to our understanding of nature. However, it is challenging to produce, observe and utilize solid helium on the earth because high-pressure techniques are required to solidify helium. Here we report the discovery of room-temperature two-dimensional solid helium through the diamond lattice confinement effect.

Synthesis and properties of free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon
Abstract Bulk amorphous materials have been studied extensively and are widely used, yet their atomic arrangement remains an open issue. Although they are generally believed to be Zachariasen continuous random networks1, recent experimental evidence favours the competing crystallite model in the case of amorphous silicon2,3,4. In two-dimensional materials, however, the corresponding questions remain unanswered.

Fast kinetics of magnesium monochloride cations in interlayer-expanded titanium disulfide for magnesium rechargeable batteries
Although the faster diffusion owing to the lower polarity of MgCl+ vs Mg2+ is expectable based on the predictably decreased polarization strength, computational studies provide quantitative information on the diffusivity as a function of interlayer distance and the chemical structure of the ions, as well as the extent of TiS expansion required for Mg2+ and MgCl+ to achieve maximum diffusivities.
