As someone who has been a journalist for almost 40 year, working as a senior writer at the New York Times, Newsweek, etc, the decision by @WilliamLewis, a Murdoch alum, to cripple the @washingtonpost by abandoning endorsements, is one of the most craven actions I've ever seen../1 ...taken in the industry. Make no mistake, this wasn't just cowardice. It was @WilliamLewis and perhaps @JeffBezos dragging a now-once great paper into the sewer because of their own political beliefs.

Jun 14 I know lots of gun enthusiasts and collectors (I grew up in Texas.) And I have never met one who isn't horrified by bump stocks. "You can't aim the damn things," one said to me a few years back. "They're good for only one thing: Spraying lots of unaimed bullets into a crowd."...1 ...make no mistake: Gun nuts who demand them have no interest in shooting *at* a target. They just shoot in the general direction. These are nothing more than machine guns that can't be aimed.
Criminal gangs might be selling your identity to fraudsters. Here’s how and how to protect yourself. Original
At 3:27 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2022, Bank of America began processing an account application submitted online by a criminal using a false identity. Two minutes later, it asked the imaginary person to confirm his email address. At 4:02 p.m., the bank emailed the criminal. “Great news!” the email declared — the new account was ready for use. No one from Bank of America saw or spoke to the client before opening the account to confirm he was who he claimed to be.

Florida wants to teach about "skills" slaves obtained in the antebellum south because "beneficent" slaveholders taught their slaves to read, write, blacksmithing, etc. They say this is supported by "scholars." Well, let's see what the scholars really say.../1 ...first, let's start with blacksmithing, since this is specifically what DeSantis mentioned yesterday.
Criminal Gangs Have Used Sham Bank Accounts To Steal Billions
In January 2020, Debi Gamber studied a computer screen filled with information on scores of check deposits. As a manager for eight years at a TD Bank branch in the Baltimore suburb of Essex, she had reviewed a flurry of account activity as a security measure. These transactions, though, from the ATM of a tiny TD location nestled in a nearby mall, struck her as suspicious.

Special investigation sheds light on criminal gangs and sham bank accounts
The Conversation U.S. has published its first investigation, “Heists Worth Billions.” This is a collaboration between The Conversation U.S. and Georgia State University’s Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group, directed by Professor David Maimon. The research group develops techniques to improve cybersecurity by studying online criminal networks and observing underground markets. Two years ago, Maimon and his team saw a large number of stolen checks flooding those markets.

As a flood of details of the Trump MaraLago case come out, Trump, commentators etc say Smith's team is leaking. As someone who has covered these kinds of cases many times, that is almost certainly not true. And the fact that this much is coming out is a bad sign for Trump.../1 ...as investigations near their close, there are scores of people who know what is going on.
Nikki Haley Should Never Be President
Nikki Haley’s problem as a presidential candidate is more than just that she has no shot of winning the nomination. Worse, she just proved she is unfit for the office. Her attempts to become a mini-Trump won’t work, because anyone who has followed her career knows that’s not her. But on Sunday, she said something so reckless that she made clear she would say anything - regardless of how dangerous it is - to appeal to the uninformed for votes.
Fox News Does Not Deserve to Survive
Fox News officials and hosts know their viewers are rage addicts who desperately crave propaganda that reinforces their beliefs. They understand that telling the truth is bad for business. They cling to any absurdity as “proof” of the lies they spin – including nonsense from someone who thinks she may be a decapitated ghost.
The Problem is Police Culture
I finally forced myself to watch the Tyre Nichols videos so I could write this. Now, I just want to throw up. The brutality of the ferocious beating of Nichols was almost incomprehensible, with a level of barbarous violence that would make some Mafia enforcers blanch. What we are witnessing is a group of men who have lost any sense of humanity, where viciousness and savagery was so accepted that none of them feared they would face consequences for this crime.
Paranoia is at the Foundation of the GOP
Look back one century. In 1921, the Republican Party committed to - and did - close American borders to immigrants. They were called criminals, incapable of being good Americans, and - in the words of Republican Congressman Fred S. Purnell of Indiana, responsible for “the stream of irresponsible and broken wreckage that is pouring into the lifeblood of America.” By 1930, immigration was at its lowest in 100 years.
America's Co-Conspirators in Putin's Crimes
There was a time they would be called useful idiots. But we can no longer dismiss the cheerleading by much of the GOP for Vladimir Putin’s war crimes as the consequence of stupidity. Rather, for reasons almost beyond comprehension. they have become Russia’s useful co-conspirators. From the time of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, a huge number of Americans who identify themselves as Republicans have been throwing love bombs Putin’s way, no matter that magnitude of his slaughter.
Trump's Hatred of America in Seven Words
They were only seven words out of millions uttered in person and on video in the historic hearings of the congressional committee investigating the January 6 coup attempt. Seven words of enormous significance that reveal the evil and anti-Americanism of the 45th President of the United States.

I have been writing since 2014 that there has never been a worse SCOTUS Justice than Alito. Even as a lower court judge, he ignored facts he didn't like, dismissing them with a "that's ridiculous" response, has ignored law and precedent to reach the outcome he wants. He has.../1 ...to my knowledge never ruled on any issue that contradicts what is found in the GOP platform. He has attended/been keynoter *as a Justice* for fundraisers to benefit GOP causes. He is unfit.
Trump's Trading Card Grift is Worse than You Think
When Trump posted his “big announcement” that he was selling his own NFT trading cards, the whole world burst out laughing. Members of the MAGA cult had thought he was going to declare his candidacy for Speaker of the House or maybe reveal the identity of his Vice-Presidential selection in his third run for the White House. QAnon cultists felt sure he was going to identify members of the Deep State, or the arrest and execution of Democrats, or that the military had installed him as President. Nope.
The Corruption of Supreme Court Conservatives
The current Supreme Court is undeserving of respect. Many of its decisions are untethered from any form of recognizable jurisprudence, and the contempt of conservative Justices for precedent is incomprehensible. The collapse of public approval for the Court - dismissed in arrogance by people like Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito - has nothing to do with disagreeing with “objective” decisions.
Republicans Hate America
Francisco Franco. Adolph Hitler. Augusto Pinochet. Ferdinand Marcos. And now…Donald Trump. The list of dictators who ended or suspended their nation’s constitutions is a rogue’s gallery of thugs whose lust for power and uncontested rule outweighed commitment to their nations.
Here We Go Again
The Trump gum is stuck again on the Republican shoe. And whatever they say, no matter how they spin it, the politicians in the GOP are horrified. This is not 2016, where the GOP will be able to insult Trump, expose him for what he really is, and then start lying about their opinions as soon as the twice-impeached former president wins the nomination.
The GOP and Its "Evidence" of Voter Fraud
A bank manager demands that tellers count all the institution’s cash. But he creates two sets of rules: One group of tellers can use machines to count half the money. A second group must count it all by hand and inspect every bill to make sure it is not a forgery. And they both must start at the same time. The process is slow because of all the restrictions on hand counts. So, the bank manager accuses the tellers of embezzling the cash.
The GOP's Monster Has Turned on Its Creator
Were it not for the demands of slaveholders, Donald Trump never would have been president. He never won a popular vote. His demands that GOP candidates kowtow to his delusions and lies fuels the nominations of crazies. And those candidates, when faced with a sane electorate, lose, lose, lose. Trump is, was, and always will be a loser. Every sane Republican politician knew that from the get-go.
Cash to Politicians is Free Speech. A Vote Isn't?
If I send an envelope stuffed with cash to support a politician, that’s free speech. If I send an envelope stuffed with my ballot to support a politician, it’s not. That is the twisted world created by our current Supreme Court, the most illegitimate in modern times - and maybe ever.
Texas Shows the Dystopian Future Craved by the GOP
(DALLAS) — The woman listened to her obstetrician in horror and fury. Her wanted pregnancy was effectively over; her water had broken, and the 19-week-old fetus could not survive. But it still had what state politicians defined as a heartbeat, the doctor said, so he could not perform an abortion. Texas law required them to wait until either the fetus died, or the woman was near death herself.
The Catholic Archdiocese Lies to Stop Abortion, Part 2
In the Catholic Church, abortion is identified as a “moral evil” and a “grave sin” that can lead to eternal damnation in hell, where whoever obtained the procedure would burn forever and ever. So why does the Detroit Archdiocese feel compelled to lie to parishioners about an upcoming vote on keeping abortion legal? Shouldn’t the prospect of endless torture for all time be enough to persuade Catholics without lying to them? Apparently not.
International Awards
Each year we recognize our colleagues and peers for their efforts in furthering the Compliance & Ethics profession. Representatives from Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics & Health Care Compliance Association (SCCE & HCCA) and the Compliance Certification Board (CCB) review nominated candidates and select individuals and companies for their efforts and innovative accomplishments to move our profession forward.
The Catholic Church Jumps into the Politics Pool, Part 1
I thought Catholic Archbishops were supposed to tell the truth, at least publicly. Silly me. I’ve learned not to give them so much credit after reading a political mailer sent to parishioners by the Archbishop of Detroit. The issue of abortion rights is the hot issue in Michigan’s November election. A citizen-approved ballot measure called Proposal 3 is up for a vote, and if approved, a new right to "reproductive freedom" would be added to the state constitution.
Is Elon Musk Part of the QAnon Cult?
QAnon is a terrorist threat. It is a cult that believes prominent Democrats and scientists - including President Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, and Anthony Fauci - have been taken to Guantanamo, executed, and replaced by clones. Its cult believers have massacred their own families, attacked an FBI field office, tried to kill Pelosi’s husband Paul, and been primary participants in the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
The GOP's Limitless Lying Endangers America
Time was, listening to the endless stream of fantasies spun within the conservative news bubble just triggered jaw-dropping disbelief for reality-based Americans. Think of Rush Limbaugh in 2011 attacking President Obama for sending 100 American troops to stop the Lord's Resistance Army, a Christian terrorist organization of murderous rapists and child sex traffickers.
Right Wing Terrorism and Paul Pelosi
I have immersed myself in raw sewage for years. Since 2018, I have read right-wing social media, bulletin boards, and websites since 2018 to keep track of terrorist threats. Using information from Parler alone, I posted a warning three weeks before January 6 that a coordinated attack by MAGA cultists was coming.
Be Afraid for Your Family - and Yourself
Two weeks from today, the third most consequential election this country’s 246-year history will be held, and it seems like even at this late date, too many Americans are not yet taking it seriously. We are on the precipice, potentially experiencing a dramatic transformation of everything the United States has been and what its future was meant to be. We have demonstrated the growth and gradual improvement in the lives of citizens that can come from a democracy.
Perjurer in Chief
Donald Trump is a criminal and a perjurer. This is not up for debate. That a Federal judge in California just ruled that Trump submitted a false sworn statement to a Georgia court falls in the category of “Dog bites man.” Except here it is, “Trump commits perjury.” Again.
The Lies Didn't Start with Trump, Part 4
As someone who spent much of my career reporting on money matters, I’ve long been astonished when listening to Republicans discuss taxes, deficits and debt. Their words all sound like they were mined out of a college economics textbook, but when strung together, they amount to little more than incoherent flapdoodle. For years, I wondered whether the GOP really that ignorant of basic economics, or if they are just willing to upend the American economy for their own interests.

When he was in the Reform Party and a businessman, he was a crook who broke the Cuba embargo in hopes of…1 …being the first lined up to open a casino there if the embargo ended (and lied to govnt that it was a charitable effort).
