DALT: Depreciation-Assisted Land Value Tax

Economists agree Land Value Tax (LVT) is the ideal tax, or at least the “least bad tax,” as Milton Friedman famously put it. Whenever possible, we should prefer a Land Value Tax over any other tax, and here at the Center for Land Economics we’re working hard to make that a legal possibility throughout the United States. While we’re waiting to unlock those barriers, however, we shouldn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

California wants to tax billionaires’ wealth. Here’s a better target: Their land

Last week, California certified a one-time billionaire wealth tax for the November ballot: a 5% levy on the state’s billionaires — about 1% a year over five years — to raise some $20 billion annually for health care, food aid, and schools after federal cuts. The impulse is understandable. The state has a real revenue hole and billionaires can afford to help close it. But this approach fails to address the source of California’s budget instability: Proposition 13.

Book Review: The Natural Dividend

In 2023, Norwegian Researchers Jonathon Moses and Anne Margrethe Brigham wrote an excellent book called The Natural Dividend, whose basic argument is that natural resources are a big deal. If I had to summarize it in one sentence, it would be: The Earth’s bounty belongs to everyone, private property rights are good, labor and capital deserve a fair return, and please don’t hand over our precious natural resources to Some Guy.
