The Fair Dealing Obligations (Milk) Regulations 2024
How did we get here? February 2010 saw the introduction of the Groceries Supply Code of Practice (‘GSCOP’), which seeks to regulate the relationships between the largest 14 supermarkets and their suppliers. In 2020, the Agriculture Act (the ‘AA’) became law, and in April 2024, using powers from the AA, we saw the arrival of The Fair Dealing Obligations (Milk) Regulations 2024 (’FDOM Regs’). It was not obvious back then, but GSCOP was the start of something.

Mark Smart obituary
Mark Smart at RSPB Berney Marshes in Norfolk, 2002Photograph: from family/none If you have ever been to a large RSPB wetland reserve anywhere in the UK, and enjoyed the evocative calls of breeding redshank, snipe, curlew or lapwings, it is very likely that my friend Mark Smart, who has died suddenly aged 56, was involved in some way in directly creating that habitat. His work was formally recognised in 2018 when he was given the national Marsh Award for Wetland Conservation Achievement.

Mark Jones speaks to BBC Radio about pricing trends in the food, drink and hospitality sectors
Mark Jones has spoke to BBC Radio this week regarding two different approaches that the food & drink and hospitality sector have been using to boost profitability in the tough financial climate. It is increasingly common in other industries that price is relative to demand. It is something consumers can come to expect, the most obvious example being travel, peaking in school holiday periods, or in regular commuting times.

A Gripping Memoir Woven Through with Trauma
In her recently published memoir, 'Rememberings', Sinéad O'Connor takes ownership of the narrative around her life and music, writes Laura Watson. About two thirds of the way through Rememberings, Sinéad O’Connor asserts that, ‘if anyone wants to truly know me, the best way is through my songs. There is nothing I could write in this book or tell you that would help you get to know me.’ As is so often the case in this frank and gripping memoir, the artist addresses readers directly.
Theatre Etiquette
Medical students and foundation doctors are notorious for not knowing how to behave in the operating theatre. This is almost invariably because nobody ever bothers to tell you how it all works, what to expect and what to do with yourself; instead, they just expect you to somehow instinctively intuit the rules governing what is a very complex working environment.
Trump’s toxic torrent of environmental rollbacks impedes social justice
At this point, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the White House is pursuing a massive rollback of our nation’s environmental protections. Given everything going on in the world today, many people probably don’t realize that the most critical — and most egregious — of these rollbacks has been finalized just in the last three months.

Fields of Control: Oil and (In)security in Sudan and South Sudan - Sudan
By Laura M. James I. Introduction and key findings Oil and security in Sudan and South Sudan are, in the words of one former oil minister, ‘two faces of the same coin’.1 At the international, regional, national, state, and community levels, it is possible to trace how oil exploration, extraction, and exploitation have contributed to insecurity, both directly and indirectly. More rarely, these activities have temporarily improved security, often through patronage or subornation.

Why we haven't made a trustmark for technology
Doteveryone is often asked why we didn’t go ahead with an early idea to create a ‘trustmark’ for technology. The short answer is that digital products and services aren’t like bananas. Digital products are complicated, change over time (with software updates, new technologies, new data, etc) – and our attitudes towards them change too. It’s hard to set useful common standards, and evaluate these, in this sort of setting.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY NEIL HUSVAR When bulky mainframes ruled the computing world, who would have conceived of a device that fits in your back pocket, acting as phone, camera, mobile workstation, music player, and more? Steve Jobs and the company he formed, Apple, helped to fundamentally change the way we obtain and share information. Twenty years ago, would you have imagined quick, free delivery with the click of a mouse?
#Makeallwomensafe: a campaign changing the terrain for sex workers
In 1980, the English Collective of Prostitutes wrote to Len Murray, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in the United Kingdom, asking to affiliate as a union. Since we were founded in 1975, we had been defending women against criminalisation, workplace violence and exploitation, and providing other support – the kind of work a trade union does and the reason that we had become known as “The Girls’ Union”.
Project ideas I - Laura James - Medium
The ambitious idea starts with an ambitious idea and adds some more on top. If we want more control over our information online, we need new structures and processes for that data. People have been mooting and working on personal data stores, for instance, for years, but nothing has really taken off. More recently we have slightly different ideas such as HAT and Databox, trying hard to find business models where consumers can see value in getting data control.

Exploring governance experiments – Doteveryone – Medium
In a complex world, with technologies and ideas spreading more quickly than ever before, our traditional ways of balancing the needs of society and industry may not work so well, and so we need to be experimenting with alternatives. So last week, Doteveryone and Dark Matter Laboratories brought together a small diverse group to explore the idea of regulatory experiments, and what a network of organisations working on, and learning from these, might look like and do.

Harlem Mexican Restaurant Oso Seeks to Be Part of Its Community
A high-energy compilation of hip-hop and R&B fills the space at Oso, a Mexican street-food restaurant and bar in Hamilton Heights. Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy!, complains that the music is too loud. That’s not as random as it sounds: This is his son Matthew’s restaurant. “I don’t necessarily fit in that comfortably with what’s going on at a popular young restaurant… but that’s okay—hey, I had my time when I was young and enjoyed being part of a lively environment.
3 Easy Steps to Increase Business Value
How do companies decide where to allocate resources, with so many competing priorities and with every project being of the utmost importance? Limited budgets and endless projects seem to be the norm, so you would think there’s a clear answer to this question. The answer is elusive, and companies often invest time and resources in projects that result in minimal value contributions or simply in wasted money.
