A single archaeon couples long-chain fatty acid oxidation to methanogenesis
Abstract Anaerobic degradation of complex organic compounds to methane and carbon dioxide is common in the deep subsurface biosphere and has long been considered to require syntrophic cooperation, with methanogens confined to the terminal use of simple C1 and C2 substrates. Thermodynamic considerations, multi-omics analyses and microcosm experiments suggest that archaeal lineages are capable of methanogenic degradation of complex substrates1,2,3,4,5,6.
Serum perforin-1 concentration predicts severity and prognosis in community-acquired pneumonia patients
Abstract As a critical protein in cytotoxic granules, perforin-1 is involved in the immune response, triggering cell-killing effects and programmed cell death. However, existing research has not yet elucidated the role of perforin-1 in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We aimed to determine whether serum perforin-1 concentration was correlated with CAP. This study enrolled 348 CAP patients. Blood samples were drawn at admission and clinical data were recorded.

Pre-therapeutic prediction of cachexia in lymphoma patients using [ 18 F]FDG PET radiomics of muscle and fat
Abstract Cachexia adversely affects treatment outcomes in patients with lymphoma, highlighting the need for early risk identification. This study aimed to develop a predictive model using [¹⁸F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([¹⁸F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) radiomics features to identify lymphoma patients at risk of developing cachexia.
Citrulline drives age-related lipid deposition for healthspan
Abstract Too much or too less lipid deposition increases mortality, while in contrast, modest lipid deposition during aging is crucial for healthspan. How animals determine the aging state and then promote appropriate lipid deposition for lifespan benefits are largely unknown. In this study, we identified citrulline as a key metabolite driving aging-related lipid deposition for healthspan in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Gut microbiota-derived metabolites target C5AR1/KDM2A/HCAR3 axis in inflammatory bowel disease: a multi-machine learning algorithms and molecular docking study
Abstract Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic recurrent disorder. Gut microbiota-derived metabolites regulate intestinal homeostasis, but their molecular mechanisms in IBD remain unclear. Current studies lack systematic “microbiota-metabolite-target” network mining with multi-method validation. This study integrates network pharmacology, three machine learning algorithms, and molecular docking to construct this regulatory network in IBD.
Superconducting hybrid energy transmission and storage system and its projected impact on a sustainable energy future
Abstract For the target of 2060 carbon neutrality, extensively increasing the utilisation of solar and wind renewables poses a challenge in surplus energy compensation and multi-site long-distance power transmission. In this article, we proposed a superconducting hybrid-energy transmission and storage system, which can realise surplus energy absorption through large-scale liquid hydrogen production/storage consumption and large-capacity multi-energy transmission.

Mean temperature scalings in compressible wall turbulence
In the present study, we report a Mach number invariant function (ϕS) for the mean temperature field in compressible wall turbulence. We demonstrate its validation by comparing it with the invariant functions derived in the previous studies—the semilocal-type (ϕSL) and van Driest-type (ϕVD) scalings—case by case.
Multiscale analysis of the space-time properties in incompressible wall-bounded turbulence
It is believed that the space-time correlation is a fundamental statistical tool for analyzing the dynamic coupling between spatial and temporal scales of the motion in turbulent flows. In this paper, by coupling the inner-outer interaction model with the attached-eddy hypothesis, the space-time correlations of both wall-shear fluctuations and the streamwise velocity fluctuations carried by wall-attached eddies at a given length scale are investigated.
Phys. Rev. Fluids 9, 034611 (2024) - Investigation of the inclination angles of wall-attached eddies for streamwise velocity and temperature fields in compressible turbulent channel flows
Townsend's attached eddy hypothesis (AEH), one of the most elegant models in incompressible wall turbulence, has been recently applied to compressible wall turbulence to explain the numerical observations and predict the scaling laws. Before a more profound extension can be established, a comprehensive investigation of the features of wall-attached eddies for streamwise velocity and temperature fields in compressible wall-bounded turbulence is required.

Bidirectional Manipulation of Iodine Redox Kinetics in Aqueous Fe-I2 Electrochemistry
Bidirectional Manipulation of Iodine Redox Kinetics in Aqueous Fe-I2 Electrochemistry Catalyzing conversion is a promising approach to unlock the theoretical potentials of I2/I- redox couple in aqueous Fe-I2 electrochemistry. However, most reported results only obtain one directional efficient iodine conversion and cannot realize a balance of fully reduction and reoxidation, thereby resulting in rapid capacity decay and/or low Coulombic Efficiency.
