What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelancing for rock magazine Metal Hammer. Dream come true.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
of course. i used to smoke as well
How is social media changing news?
It's made it less discerning, way too gossipy, and lowered the standard of writing
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
so many journalists are fictional....
What does it mean to be a journalist?
for me, it means learning about other perspectives, asking intelligent and unexpected questions, and representing others fairly and honestly

cant remember
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
i dont really have a preference
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
airbook, university PC, notebook and pen

i dont like them
Who do you wish followed you?
nobody, i honestly do not care about stuff like this
Why did you become a journalist?
I reviewed a friend's band in 1988, and thanks to a combination of naivete and bloody-mindedness, it got published.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I had a poem and a story published
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
too many to recall, I've had a pretty glittery career
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Make sure you know who to pitch your ideas to, think about what the publication is looking for, and keep your suggestion brief and succinct.
When's the best time to pitch you?
anytime, we live in an age of constant communication and occasionally i have insomnia
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Too many to remember.... I've done a lot of amazing jobs
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Thankfully haven't really had any
What's your favorite drink?
it depends
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
reading, walking, conversing, watching British crime drama on the telly
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
New Philosopher, Hole & Corner, domestic noir novels
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Probably age-related. We live in a horribly biased society
