Marie K. Shanahan is an associate professor of journalism at the University of Connecticut. She spent 17 years as a reporter and online news editor before joining the faculty at UConn's nationally accredited journalism program. Shanahan's academic research explores online commenting, digital discourse, online reputation and news engagement. She teaches undergraduate journalism students about digital newsgathering, multimedia storytelling and online ethics. Admittedly, she spends way too much …

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first full-time job: reporter for the "Hartford Neighborhoods" page of The Hartford Courant. Two stories a day, one brief, one photo.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. My parents owned a big, heavy Underwood with keys that would jam. The inky mess taught me how to use Wite-out and edit carefully.

How is social media changing news?

Constant connection means immediate and ongoing discovery, delivery, correction and participation.
