Mansion tax: Why £2m may be only the start
From April 2028, owners of residential properties in England worth £2m or more will pay an additional annual charge. The charge starts at £2,500 and rises to £7,500 for properties worth more than £5m. At this threshold fewer than 1% of properties in England are expected to be caught. Recently, as the government continues to consider how it can balance the books, there have been reports that the starting threshold could be reduced from £2m to £1.5m.

Tigers reach $2.8M deal with Michael Fulmer, avoid arbitration
DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with Michael Fulmer, agreeing to a $2.8 million, one-year deal with the right-hander after he missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery. It's the same amount Fulmer received last year when he lost his arbitration case with the Tigers. Fulmer won Rookie of the Year honors for Detroit in 2016 and won 10 games in 2017. But he struggled in 2018, and that season ended early for him because of a right knee injury.

100 losses no novelty this year; same with 100 wins
(AP) — The Baltimore Orioles might lose 110 games and still not end up with the No. 1 pick in the draft. That race, so to speak, is pretty unforgiving this year. The Orioles (49-100) are in the middle of a four-game series at Detroit (44-104) that matches the teams with the two worst records in baseball. Baltimore won two of the first three, so that leaves the Orioles unlikely to finish behind the Tigers.

Tigers kick off long road trip with series in Boston
Fresh off a sweep of the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox finally seem as if they're close to putting their woeful start to the season behind them. The key missing piece still: Chris Sale. The left-hander seeks his first win of the year as Boston welcomes the Detroit Tigers on Monday to kick off a 10-game homestand. Sale (0-4, 8.50 ERA) takes the mound in the opener of the four-game series opposite Tigers southpaw Matthew Boyd (1-1, 2.96).

"We haven't made any formal offer, nor have we talked formally about anything like that," Avila said Thursday in Lakeland. "But he knows that obviously it's in our minds, as it is in his mind.
Still rebuilding, Tigers hoping for growth in 2019
DETROIT (AP) -- Al Avila is known for his candor, and the Detroit general manager has remained pretty straightforward about what the future holds for the Tigers. Yes, they're still rebuilding. "The only reason I'm being honest is because: How do you hide this?" Avila joked earlier this offseason. "I'm exaggerating, but it's a necessary process." After two consecutive 98-loss seasons, the Tigers are expected to struggle again this year.
Michael Fulmer won't pitch in near future, to work on mechanics
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer will not pitch in games in the near future, focusing on lower-body mechanics. Gardenhire declined to provide additional details about the decision. Fulmer won AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 but has struggled to return to that form.

Tigers pitcher Casey Mize, majors' No. 1 pick, trying to fit in
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers issued jersey No. 74 to Casey Mize and for the next few days, he will be just one of 31 pitchers in camp, trying to get his arm and body ready for a long baseball season. But the 21-year-old right-hander was the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft last June, and as Detroit's No. 1 hope for the future, he was bound to attract more than his share of attention, even while just trying to fit in.
Nationals' Max Scherzer, Astros' Justin Verlander concerned about game
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Two more aces are expressing concern about how major league teams are playing their cards. Washington right-hander Max Scherzer said Thursday there are too many teams trying not to win, and all the rebuilding "poisons the game." Houston star Justin Verlander, a former teammate of Scherzer with Detroit, thinks the current economic approach pursued by some teams will continue to drive away fans.
