After the 2026 NFL Draft, the Patriots wrapped up their initial rookie class with a handful of undrafted free agents. The team left two roster spots open for someone to make a good impression. That’s what happened with Xavier Holmes at Patriots rookie minicamp at the beginning of May. After going undrafted out of James Madison, this edge rusher shocked Patriots position coach Mike Smith so much that the team ended up signing the first-year player to its 90-man roster.

FOXBOROUGH – The NFL is a tough business. Vinny DePalma found that out quickly. After being hired as a Patriots defensive assistant in 2024, DePalma wasn’t sure what his future would hold after that first year, when then-head coach Jerod Mayo and his coaching staff were let go after one season. DePalma was the only defensive coach retained from that staff by Mike Vrabel for the 2025 season.
