Higher education is essential to driving economic growth in Westchester | Opinion Original
As federal and state leaders debate the efficacy of higher education, one truth remains evident: independent colleges and universities in New York State are indispensable drivers of economic and social progress. This is particularly true for the Hudson Valley and Westchester County, where these institutions contributed $4.8 billion to the region’s economy during the 2022–2023 fiscal year and employ thousands of New Yorkers.
The Conversation: Why Fitzgerald's 'Gatsby,' but not Parrott's 'Ex-Wife'
In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald published “The Great Gatsby.” Four years later, Ursula Parrott published her first novel, “Ex-Wife.” I probably read “The Great Gatsby” a dozen times between junior high school and my late 20s. But I had never even heard of Ursula Parrott or her 1929 bestseller until I stumbled across a screenplay adaptation of one of Parrott’s short stories. Fitzgerald, in fact, had been hired to write that screenplay.

India, more Brics and the moon
India became the fourth country to successfully land a craft on the Moon last week. The feat sparked an outpouring of national pride. The Chandrayaan-3 robotic lander touched down close to the Moon’s south pole, an area of profound scientific interest that had not been visited until this point. China has had a few craft make it to the Moon in recent years, while NASA’s Artemis program, that aims to return human to the surface, is aiming for a landing as soon as 2025.

Why have you read 'The Great Gatsby' but not Ursula Parrott’s 'Ex-Wife'?
By Marsha Gordon, Professor of Film Studies, North Carolina State University ‘Ex-Wife’ originally outsold ‘The Great Gatsby,’ but critics sniffed at the novel, deeming it a melodramatic period piece − even though it tackled timeless issues like gender, money and power. Marsha on the Move: Barbie
When Business Council of Westchester President Marsha Gordon is not advocating for businesses in the County, she can be found at the cinema or theater. Her “Marsha on the Move” column appears monthly in ArtsNews. I really couldn’t believe I was going to see Barbie. Yes, I had Barbies growing up.
#121 Marsha Gordon | Discovering the forgotten historical figure & hidden writings of Ursula Parrott
What if I told you that in 1929, a woman in NYC wrote a best seller, made a fortune during the great depression and then went on to write over 20 books, and screenplays – many of which became Hollywood films – only to tell you that no one knows her name?
Women on the Verge: The Jazz Age Origins of Burnout
“I have a theory,” the recently-rediscovered writer Ursula Parrott mused in a late 1920s letter in which she wonders if she should accept an advertising position at Arnold Constable’s Fifth Avenue store, “that it’s perfectly possible to manage a job, and one other thing, well,” but no more than that.

Albany should create jobs — instead of taxing the suburbs to death | Opinion
New York state’s 2021-22 budget negotiations took a bleak turn this week, when both houses of the Legislature announced their plans for over $7 billion in tax increases and a 22.6% increase in spending. If enacted, New York will be the top-spending state in the country, with a budget rivaling California’s. Residents of New York City, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties already carry a disproportionate tax burden, accounting for 62% of all state personal income taxes.

Op Ed: New York must put the brakes on prevailing wage legislation
With the shock of Amazon’s decision to abandon its plan for opening a second headquarters in New York still fresh, New York state now is facing another decision with the potential to be even more damaging to the state’s increasingly fragile economy. It’s called Prevailing Wage legislation and it is a construction project killer. Brett Kavanaugh goes to the movies
I’m a film studies professor, so when I first saw an image of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s June 1982 calendar, I immediately noticed his movie plans. In between exams, a beach trip, basketball camp and workouts, Kavanaugh, like millions of other Americans that year, went to the movies. In fact, 1982 was, at the time, Hollywood’s most lucrative year at the box office.

#MeToo on the 1930s silver screen
Written by Marsha Gordon, Professor of Film Studies, North Carolina State University Time’s 2017 Person of the Year was “The Silence Breakers[1],” a growing contingent of women who have been speaking out about sexual harassment by men in positions of power. But the sexual exploitation of women is hardly something new. As Time observed, the #MeToo movement “has actually been simmering for years, decades, centuries.” In order to prepare for a course I’ll be teaching next fall about working women in 1920s and 1930s films, I’ve been watching a lot of movies from the period.
